You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, "I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along." . . . You must do the thing you think you cannot do - Eleanor_Roosevelt
Two hundred granite steps make their way up the hillside on Asticou Terraces. Although a moderately steep climb there are several terraces where it is possible to rest and admire the view of Northeast Harbor in the distance. The climb ends at the top of the hill and opens to the beautiful Thuya Garden. Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island, Maine.
in parc de sa riera, even the mundane transforms into art. a man and his dog ascend a staircase painted with vibrant flowers, their silhouettes breaking the monotony of the rigid, brutalist lines. the blank sky frames the scene like an empty canvas, letting the geometry and graffiti tell their story. it’s a quiet juxtaposition—nature-inspired murals meeting stark concrete, and the intimacy of a stroll set against a minimalist backdrop.
if you ever wander through palma, don’t just walk past the parc de sa riera. stop, look up, and take it in—you might see moments like this.

Every step at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is a journey through time, connecting past and present. Housed in a historic Beaux-Arts building that once served as the city’s Main Library, the museum now stands as a gateway to the rich and diverse artistic traditions of Asia. From ancient sculptures to contemporary masterpieces, these halls echo the stories of civilizations, cultures, and creativity that have shaped the world for centuries. As you ascend these stairs, you walk in the footsteps of history, discovering the beauty and depth of Asian heritage, preserved and celebrated in the heart of San Francisco.
A couple of people-watching snaps on the Mound, as folk were coming and going from the Playfair Steps, which run up and down next to the National Gallery of Scotland.
Very occasionally you find yourself in the right place at the right time with the camera. I was traveling back from a family day out and noticed the fog rolling in off the sea by Bedruthan Steps on the North Cornwall Coast. I parked the car in the National Trust car park and legged it towards the cliff edge. There was some wonderful light just as the sun dipped behind the fog - but it only lasted for a few minutes.

Steps follow a curving path down an incline at the Portland Japanese Garden.
Although it seems odd to me now, this is one of those photographs that I “left behind” at the time I made it. I no longer recall whether that was a matter of becoming distracted by something else or possibly I wasn’t able to see it correctly at the time. I only came across it again recently while doing my shelter-in-place review of my archives of older raw files. I had actually forgotten about the photograph — or, more accurately, a small series of photographs I made of this subject.
The specific location hardly matters, but it is in the Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon. My recollection is that as we walked through this part of the garden and descended these steps I paused very briefly to make a few handheld exposures. There were other photographs from that day that seemed took my attention, and I apparently had too little left for this. But when I came upon it last week, it suddenly seemed like it would work in black and white.

By the time I got to the bottom of the hill, the sun had set even further and was lighting under the arches of this bridge with a golden hint of a reflection in the water.

This beautiful sunset at Bedruthan Steps, Cornwall, showcases a dramatic coastline with rugged cliffs and sea stacks. The sky, painted with hues of purple and gold, reflects on the serene ocean. The golden sandy beach and dark rocks add contrast, creating a breathtaking, tranquil seascape.
