Located in the heart of Rome, this vibrant and elegant square is surrounded by 18th-century buildings augmented by the colorful flowers that adorn the Spanish Steps. The elegant steps by Francesco de Sanctis (1723-1726) consist of twelve flights of varying width, which descend to the scenic Franciscan Church of Trinita dei Monti.*

The hospital was designed by John Lamb Murray to accommodate 500 patients and opened as the Lanark District Asylum, The complex included gardens, a farm, a power-plant, a reservoir, a railway-line and a cemetery, the nursing complex was later added in 1931
After the introduction of the “Care In The Community” act in the early 1980s, the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in 1988.
There is also a series of tunnels that run under the hospital & old now demolished nursing complex, these are no longer assessable

I used my hand as an improvised lens hood to produce the previous image. But this one has a certain charm, I think.
Steps leading to an outside terrace where I was heading to have a coffee and croissant! I noticed the wonderful shadows in the bright sunlight and the strong leading lines!

Lots of steps to climb and areas for selfies. At the top is Trinità dei Monti church (Italian Renaissance architecture). Piazza di Spagna is at the bottom of the steps. As of 2019 you are no longer allowed to sit on the Spanish Steps. The stairway itself is 138 steps. From the Spanish Steps, tourists can go west to the Trevi Fountain and after that the Pantheon. - Rome, Italy
