Poetry in motion? When we had our ruby anniversary party at the steam museum we had this one and the cream engine with the huge flywheel working all evening. This beautiful piece of engineering from James Kay in Bury, with twin cylinders and a single flywheel, delivers a mighty 36 horsepower at 36rpm. Taken with my Nikon 1 J5.
These two Photographs show Morris County Central Locomotive Number 4039. This 0-6-0 Steam Locomotive was built by the American Locomotive Company (aka: ALCO) in November 1942 for the US Army as number 4039. The Virginia Blue Ridge Railway bought the Locomotive from the War Assets Administration on February 17, 1947 and renumbered it, as their Number 5.
In 1965, No. 5 was purchased by Earle Gil for his Morris County Central Railroad (aka: MCC) in New Jersey. It was returned to it's Original Number as MCC No. 4039 and named the Earle H. Gil.
The Morris County Central began operating the 4039 on excursions in 1966 until they went Bankrupt in 1980. The Locomotive then went through several ownership changes until it was acquired by the Whippany Railway Museum in 1994. I took these photographs on June 12, 2002 during one of my visits back to New Jersey. For additional information on this Locomotive, see:

Stationary boiler and Steam engine. Made in England in the 1950s.
Taken out of storage so the grandkids can see it working, and perhaps marvel over it too!
The boiler has a sight glass, adjustable overpressure relief valve and a miniature working pressure gauge.
The flywheel and pistons: two of these steam powered engines were used to raise and lower Tower Bridge

The engine is a double acting beam engine of the James Watt design: It features a separate condenser (not shown in this picture), the Watt linkage as well as a crankshaft (not pictured, located at the other end of the beam).
The engine ist currently on display at the Cruquius Museum, Holland.
On the occasion of the 51st Railway Week, Western Railway ran a Heritage Steam Train recreating the past. The heritage Steam Run took place on Sunday, when this special train hauled by Shehanshah, a steam engine, chugged to its journey from Mumbai Central to Borivli, puffing great clouds of nostalgia. The train's steam engine was the pride of the WP class of locomotive engines. The engine was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia, USA, in 1947.

This "Dubdee", WD, or War Department 2-8-0 locomotive was completed for the British War Department in 1945. Surplus to requirements it was sold to the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) who later resold it to Swedish State Railways (Statens Jarnvagar). Sold again to Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1973.

Fowler (Midland) 0-6-0 43924 approaches Oxenhope Station on the Keighley & Worth Valley line in Yorkshire. This was the first engine to be rescued from Barry Scrapyard in 1968 and is now in regular service on the railway.

'Ellie' on the turntable at Benny Halt, Lappa Valley Railway.
No old boiler is Ellie, in fact she isn't even teenager, only being built in 2006, and doing service in someone's garden railway (some garden that then...) before coming to the Lappa Valley in August 2017.
Working most weekends means that I have limited access to operational steam these days, so when the rare opportunity arises with a steam engine operating locally on a day when I'm actually off, Something would be amiss for me not to go and see

A Stuart S50 I bought on eBay. After restoration. Unfortunately the original machinist didn't do a great job, and it binds when things are tightened up.

A steam engine I built out of a very old air compressor.
This is the same engine as in my other video. I removed the eccentric valve gear and replaced it with a automotive type cam system. Since the exhaust stroke never changes it has the hardest to access cam. The inlet cam can be changed in a few minutes for a different cutoff. The engine is running at about 25psi in the first half, and about 45 in the second half. With the exhaust valve installed the uniflow ports do almost nothing, I blocked them and it had almost no effect speed wise. Running on steam with the ports open, you might get a reduction of steam use as the exhaust steam would not cool the head. The engine is running on air in the video.
