Candidates for all offices in the election cycle of 2012 spent about 7 billion dollars total. I wonder if anyone genuinely feels better about his or her life after a favored candidate won. What, in fact, was won? Does anyone other than the few people whose lobbyists (over 40,000 lobbyists?) successfully prevent their immense incomes from being shared with workers know?

Artist's statement. It reads:
Throughout my life, I have always been interested in photography. Until recently, I had been mostly an "armchair photographer" of sorts, reading about cameras and photographic techniques, but never investing in any equipment to actively pursue the art. When the chance came to take a class in black and white photography in my studies at Carnegie Mellon University, I enrolled immediately. Taking the course gave me a reason to bite the bullet and dive straight into the world of photography. One requirement of the class was a portfolio of twenty 8x10 prints, which are presented here.
The majority of the prints in this portfolio are images of the abandoned Donora Southern Railroad, a victim of the collapse of the steel industry in southwestern Pennsylvania. The first five photographs present a study of a large pile of decaying railroad ties. The sequence examines order and disorder, as well as the interaction between nature and its reclamation of these objects that were once part of nature themselves.
The five prints that follow explore two abandoned tunnels on the railroad. They investigate the interaction between light and the aged concrete surfaces of the structure. Related to the tunnel images is the next sequence of five prints documenting debris strewn about inside the tunnels. Again, the focus here is the interaction of light and shadow with the subject and its surroundings.
The other five images in this portfolio are of different subject matter. Two prints are abstractions of a sidewalk. Prominent lines divide the images into geometric shapes. Also, the textures and tones in the photographs provide additional means of differentiating the shapes. The final three photographs are self-portraiture. They show me machining, one of my favorite pastimes, on an old Pratt and Whitney lathe. The images are printed full frame to give an antique appearance, as the process of machining by hand has become somewhat of a lost art since the advent of computer controlled milling.
Overall, there is a thought that binds all of the photographs in this portfolio together: taking what is otherwise dirty, gritty, and mundane and finding something clean and powerful. Each image reflects this idea.
This portfolio is presented as a final requirement to complete Black and White Photography I, taught by instructor Jamie Gruzska.

Caption: Statement I use photo and text to create a conceptual artistic works. The purpose of creating an artwork for me is to create questions in the mind of the audiences, I avoid decorative art in my work and I try to create thoughtful work instead of enjoyable. “Photo- text” is the method that I use in my art work. I used a combination of text and photo in my recent series “Blind”.In this project, I took photo of the blind and then I wanted them to tell me what they think about their appearance. After that I combined these texts with the photos I took from them and the second image that was restored was based on the mental imagination of these people. I was looking for visual imagery of people who have no visual imagery and tried to convey this fantasy by words. The similarity in all my work is their conecction to my private life. For instance I started of taking photo of the blind because I have had eye pain. This disease lasted and when the project started, the diease ended. In my works, I am seeking to get rid of my own personal problems and pains. I use photo-text for transfering my ideas to create questions in undiences mind. I combine my photos with texts to create conceptual artistic works.

Ishtar is named after the Babylonian goddess of fertility, love, war and sex. It is a handmade one-of-a-kind statement necklace designed and made by Michelle Bush with a centerpiece that features a 2" x 1.5" serpentine pendant, dyed bone, an antique coin, Baltic amber, carved wood, and an agate donut.
The neckpiece is of bead-woven Japanese and Czech glass seed beads with shell discs and copper colored freshwater pearls. It is finished with a handmade non-tarnish brass wire hook-and-eye clasp. The overall length is 18 inches and it weighs 3.8 ounces/109 grams.
Artist Statement
My research into symbiotic relationships has led my recent work in a sculptural direction. As a supplemental work to my upcoming thesis, this small piece incorporates new ideas while drawing on past observations. Previously, my work was based within the opposition of resilience and fragility. Materiality continues to be very important, especially as I synthesize various media such as wood, ceramics, and print (paper). In this particular piece, I am using ceramic pieces that were built in tandem with one another. How I treated one piece was mirrored in the hand-building process. This duplication of forms and the repeated circle are how I am communicating the significance of balance. The screen printed pattern in the center is derived from crochet, a nod to earlier work and the reference to a soft material that contrasts the stability of fired clay.

Currently the main ideas that underpin my work are all linked by being influenced and directed by primary research. One area of art I’m interested in is portraiture, and a part of this which is growing in importance for me, is to explore the character and emotional state and history of the subject in interview and discussion, as part of producing the work. Thus the finished work is much more revealing of the sitter than just a portrait. This direct use of the subject’s emotions and character as a main influence on the work greatly improves its impact and relevance and adds depth to the finished work. My works based on emotions also vary greatly. Some attempt to directly portray an emotion through painting; others try to show the subject’s emotional connection to other factors such as environments and other people. For example I have completed a piece which shows the subject’s emotional link to large bodies of water.
I am very interested in people, their motivations, experiences and states of mind. It is evident in my more traditional portraiture and life drawing. Also, when I produce collaborative work with other artists, other people tend to play quite a significant role in my work.
Another influence on my work is an eagerness to experiment with surfaces on which to paint. These range from roof tiles to discarded boards and corrugated metal. In this way, the surface used for the work can also reveal or highlight a characteristic or personality trait of the interviewee. For example, if they were very concerned about the environment, painting directly onto wood may be interesting.
The use of different surfaces can also engage the subject more in the creative process. This idea of getting people interested and therefore involved in art, and my work in particular, is something that I would like to improve and develop in future pieces. This aspect is recognised and well developed at the University of Brighton. Schemes such as the community university partnership program (CUPP) aid the local community and provide opportunities for both students and community members, with projects like On our doorsteps, already being run.
A key area of my work that I am keen to advance is to further develop the concepts behind my art, so I can evolve and refine the underlying meaning so as to further increase the impact, distinctiveness and relevance of my work.

Sash (obi), 1932-5.
This obi features planes flying over China. The Great Wall is clearly visible, together with the names of various cities. This is a reference to the Japanese military conquest of the East Asian mainland. It was men who usually wore propaganda textiles, but this obi reveals that women too could embrace the nationalistic spirit through their clothing.
Under-kimono for a young man (juban), 1932-45
In the 1930s, when Japan invaded Manchuria and China, some men's kimono designs became more nationalistic. Cars and trains were replaced with tanks, and aeroplanes and yachts with fighter jets and battleships. The imagery was confined to under-kimono and jacket linings, but this did not reflect a lack of patriotic fervour. In many ways it meant an alignment with the nation's goals on an intimate level

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk

This exhibition will present the kimono as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion, revealing the sartorial, aesthetic and social significance of the garment from the 1660s to the present day, both in Japan and the rest of the world.
The ultimate symbol of Japan, the kimono is often perceived as traditional, timeless and unchanging. Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk, the UK's first major exhibition on kimono, counters this conception, presenting the garment as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion.
