This place is across the street from the Federal Penitentiary. They've been out of business for a while (the car wash, not the Pen) and the comment about the police has been there for as long as I can remember, but the bit about Obama is new. I'm glad we didn't have to find out the answer to that question.

Statement
The name of the series photos assignment is “Phone Home”. The people in the photos are all international students of OSU just like me. Some of them are in Columbus for several years, and others only stay for several months. However, to every international student, the phone is of the same importance because it is the most convenient way to contect our famillies. When I took these photos, my friends happened to call their faraway home. Sometimes, they just want to say hello to their moms and dads; and sometimes, they have lots of things on their hearts that they want to tell. But no matter how serious the things happened to them, they always say it very calmly and they do not want their parents to worry about them. In other words, even though their parents are worried about them, they could not do anything since the far distance between them. However, my friends still want to tell many things to their parents because maybe the most important thing is not their parents’ helps but their supports and understanding, which are the most significant things that the “Phone Home” could bring us. When we laugh we use phone; when we depressed we use phone; when we cry we use phone; when we want to listen to the voice from hometown we use phone…That is the idea from the “Phone Home”.

"The Weight of What We Carry"

"The Weight of What We Carry" investigates the relationship between who we are now and who we've been—examining how past selves, past traumas, and accumulated history continue to inhabit us, to shape us, to press against our current consciousness with insistent presence.
The darker figure represents everything we carry forward but cannot fully see—the shadow-self, the accumulated damage, the versions of ourselves we've tried to leave behind but which follow nonetheless. This presence isn't entirely separate; it shares the same space, the same air, the same moment as the luminous present-self. They are intimately connected, perhaps even interdependent.
The lighter figure embodies present consciousness—vulnerable, visible, existing in full light yet forever haunted by what stands behind, beside, within. Her closed eyes suggest either peaceful coexistence with her shadow or deliberate refusal to acknowledge it. Perhaps both. Perhaps we survive our histories only by learning to live beside them without being consumed by constant backward-looking.
The red atmosphere creates emotional temperature—this isn't cold observation but hot, visceral, felt experience. The color suggests blood, passion, pain, life force—all the intensity of being simultaneously haunted and alive, damaged and beautiful, burdened and resilient.
The drips and gestural marks reference both process and impermanence—we are always in motion, always dissolving and reforming, always carrying our histories forward while simultaneously trying to escape them. The sketched elements suggest both artistic documentation and the fragmentary nature of memory itself.
This piece asks: Can we ever truly separate from our past selves? Should we? Or is wholeness found not in leaving our shadows behind but in learning to dance with them, to let them inform without determining who we become?
MelOrchid creates layered figurative works exploring consciousness, memory, and the body as site where past and present selves coexist in uneasy intimacy, investigating how we carry history forward while attempting to become something new.
