One of my first startrails using my 8mm lens. This was a combination of 227 images taken over a period of 2 hours.

120 pictures compiled, 400 iso, 5.6 aperture, 30 seconds shutterspeed

trying to catch the Perseids, with lack of success :(

I took this photo in my garden on Monday 23rd January 2012. With a new moon and no clouds, it was perfect for some star trail photography, although quite cold at 2c! I had originally driven into the hills to create one of these, but decided it would be too cold to hang out in the middle of nowhere for over an hour, so returned home and set the camera and tripod up just outside the back door.

Details for this are 105 images, taken in RAW and converted to JPEG once the white balance had been adjusted. I used my Tokina ultra-wide angle lens on a Nikon D7000 with a 30 second exposure at f/4.0 and ISO 100. The interval timer ran for just under an hour. Photos are stacked using startrails.exe and then photo was cropped and curves adjusted in GIMP.

This was my second attempt at photographing star trails and I am much happier with the result than the first try - www.flickr.com/photos/martinbamford/6193362876/ - which was taken with far too much ambient light from the nearly full moon. I hadn't planned to point my camera north for this photo, but it worked out quite well as the rotation of the earth creates star trails in circles when pointing towards the North Star.

I will definitely be trying this again; possibly when I spend a week on the beach in Dorset in May, as long as it is dark enough with a clear sky.

Picture taken in Sudurnes, south-west part of Iceland. - I went there to photograph the northen lights, but none were visable in the sky, so startrail images were taken, City Lights from Reykjavik light up the clouds, and the "ghost" figures are my friends taking pictures at the same location.

First Star trail photo

I'd liked to have a star trail. First of all I set up my camera to get the whole picture as desired with an exposure of 30 seconds. Then 35 pictures were taken and combined to this end result

Approx 180 shots (15sec exposure) over 50 minutes combined with Startrails Software.

Didn't look like there were this many stars with the naked eye. There was a lot of light polution, so this turned out better than expected.

This effect is interesting and easy to achieve. All you need is a tripod and a cable release. Oh yeah......and a fully charged battery!

Star trail photo from 12 shots each four minutes exposed. I've made 15 shots, but ice crystals developed on the lens because of the low temperatures, so the last three shots are not usable.

Night sky above Portovenere. Stars, Shooting ones and some satellites. Quite a busy day!

Lousy startrail during a cloudy night.. still sharing for record and self learning..

Note for self improvement

1.The flare from the moon light is distracting & annoying - use black card (tip from liew)

2.Lens did not focus correctly to the mountain area, so hard to focus blindly in dark.. for this picture i lock focus to the moon - maybe next time use 50mm instead of wide lens.. & smaller aperture compensated with bigger ISO..

This week was really heavy on photo editing so I didn't manage to save enough time to dedicate myself to this project... Even during the weekend my days were packed full, fortunatelly it wasn't work related, but some leisure time. So this weeks photo is of a simple star trail, and not a good one at it... I promise I'll try to redeem myself, perhaps next week... ;)
