Experimenting with star trails - shooting North just off our deck in the North Fork of Long Island, NY on a very cold, but exceptionally clear night. I would have expected the light pollution to make this impossible, but it came out better than expected. I even like the plane trails in it. 180 30 second exposures combined.
My first Startrails.

Camera: Canon T1i/500D (Hutech modified)
Lens: Contax (Carl Zeiss) 100mm f/2
Mount: "Fixed tripod" Actually, the camera is on a turned-off AP900 equatorial mount, pointed at the celestial equator, but tilted with respect to the horizon, so the stars look like they are moving straight up. Note the slanted tree to the left.
Processing: Raw converstion to TIFF using Canon Digital Photo Professional. The 60 TIFF subexposures were combined in StarStaX 0.41 lighten mode. Resizing and JPEG conversion in Photoshop.
Notes: Facing East -- stars are rising above the trees. The strange star colors are probably caused by the CLS filter combined with the modded camera that makes everything too red.
The use of light has the ability to change what we see, influence our emotions and alters our perspective of the world around us. The use of colour can heighten that experience and indeed completely change the look of an object or situation.
Whilst faffing about light painting this lakeside summer house I noticed the startrails in one of the results. So after faffing about some more I realised that I might be able to stack the shots later for greater effect.
Although there is monster light pollution I still gave the startrails.de stacking programme a go with 3 or 4 longish exposures & found it actually works quite well..
More of the same I recon over the winter months, maybe further from town though to get some cleaner skies ;-))

I must give credit to the freeware I used with these (found at www.startrails.de/html/software.html)
This seems very easy to use and certainly is effective.
