HMS WESTMINSTER REPLENISHES AT THE START OF THE NEW YEAR

Only days into the start of 2014, there was a requirement for HMS Westminster to fill up not only her own fuel tanks, but also the Lynx Mk 8 helicopter's tanks as well. Since Leaving the Seychelles after the Christmas period, HMS Westminster has conducted a number of assurance visits on various fishing vessels, which through flying sorties and sailing around her patrol areas, this in turn took a knock on effect on her fuel supplies. During the 2 and a half hour replenishment with the United States Naval Supply Ship Arctic, HMS Westminster replenished her thirsty tanks to maximum capacity in order to continue her patrols of the Indian Ocean.

HMS Westminster is conducting counter narcotics and counter piracy patrols in and around the Indian Ocean and is due to return to the Uk at the end of February.

"In the earliest versions of Windows, a program called MS-DOS Executive provided basic file management and program menu capability. This was eventually replaced by the programs File Manager and Program Manager in Windows 3.0, with the Program Manager taking on the role of the program menu.

The Program Manager was a full windowed application, which required the whole screen to be used effectively. It consisted of a simple multiple document interface which allowed users to open "program groups" and then execute the shortcuts to programs contained within.

Windows 95 was the version in which the Program Manager was superseded by the Start Menu, which condensed the Program Manager into a popup menu that could be accessed at any time. It also boasted several advantages over the Program Manager, such as the ability to nest groups within other groups, and the ability to add to the Start Menu by dropping objects (program files, document files) onto the Start Button. It is possible to hide the Start button by clicking it, then pressing escape, and then "Alt" together with the "minus" key. A context menu appeared, which offered the possiblity to move the button or close it completely, causing it to disappear. It reappeared after rebooting the operating system.

Later developments in Internet Explorer and subsequent Windows releases allowed users to customize the Start Menu and access and expand (IE) Favorites, My Documents and Administrative Tools (Windows 2000) from the Start Menu.

The most significant revision to the Start menu since its inception came in Windows XP. To help the user access a wider range of common destinations more easily, and to promote a greater sense of "personality", the Start menu was expanded to two columns; the left-hand column focuses on the user's installed applications, while the right-hand column provides access to the user's documents, and system functionality. Links to My Documents, My Pictures and other Special Folders are brought to the fore. The My Computer and My Network Places (Network Neighborhood in Windows 95 and 98) icons were also moved off the Desktop and into the Start menu, making it easier to access these icons while a number of applications are open (they could be restored optionally in the Display Properties control panel "Desktop" settings). Commonly used programs are automatically displayed in the left-hand menu, and the user may opt to "pin" programs to the start menu so that they are always accessible without having to navigate through the Programs folders."

This is a photograph from starts of both of the races in the 9th annual Longwood Village 10KM and 5KM Road Races and Fun Runs which were held in Longwood Village, Longwood, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 21st October 2018 at 11:00. The races are held annually to support the development of the local GAA club while also supporting local charities. The race has support from Trim AC which sees the race have full AAI premit status. These races have grown steadily over the years and this year again almost 400 participants to part in the two races. This is an impressive statistic given that a very large number of local runners will be preparing for the Dublin City marathon 7 days from now. However both races provide marathon runners and all other runners, joggers and walkers with an ideal opportunity to race on a very fair course in a beautiful rural setting. Barry Clarke of Longwood GAA and Trim AC and his very large group of volunteers deserve the highest of praise for the very high standard of organisation immediately apparent to anyone taking part in the race. Overall the whole day was a great success with the hard work put in by the organising committee ensuring that participants enjoyed their race experience. Both routes were accurately measured, kilometer points clearly marked, junctions well stewarded, and electronic timing provided. The event provided many local runners, joggers, fun runners and walkers with a local event to support whilst at the same time providing runners preparing for events such as the Dublin marathon with an opportunity to race a short, fast, distance in the lead up to marathon day. The GAA club provided excellent stewarding and traffic management all around the course. The race had a professional feel to it and as before it gets better year on year given the very positive feedback from many of the participants each year. The weather in the week leading up to the race was almost ideal for racing but Sunday morning seen some more breezy and wet conditions taking hold for the race, despite high temperatures for this time of year around 12 or 13c.

We have an extensive set of photographs from all of the races today in the following Flickr Album: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/albums/72157702660163805

Longwood is a small village in South East Co. Meath and is close to the town of Enfield with access to the M4 Motorway.

5KM Course: The 5KM started in Longwood village. Runners then took a left turn in the Village down St. Oliver's Road. This straight section of road brings runners to a left turn onto a very well maintained boreen road for less than one kilometer. The race then emerges and joins with the 10KM at Stoneyford where the runners take a left and then another left before arriving back at the finish line in Longwood GAA club. Overall this is a very fast and flat 5KM with no hills to speak of.

10KM Course: The 10KM event begins in Longwood Village outside Dargan's Pub and proceeds westward out of the village. There are some interesting points along this part of the course. At the 2KM point the runners will run under the double bridges - an aquaduct for the Royal Canal and a bridge carrying the Dublin Sligo Railway line. The race then enters county Kildare just before the 3km and after taking a right turn at the four-cross roads known locally as Lally's Cross it returns to County Meath on top of the River Boyne Bridge (Ashfield Bridge) which forms the county boundary. The race follows a straight road for the next 2KM until runners encounter Blackshade bridge which is the toughest climb on the route. As a point of interest Blackshade bridge brings runners back over the Royal Canal and the Railway line. The race then crosses the River Boyne again at Stoneyford before taking a right which will bring runners on a testing two kilometer stretch with some short hills. The 10KM course then joins with the 5Km course for the final 1.5KM back to Longwood GAA club for the finish.

Volley for the Cure

My friends and their girls took me to my first rugby game. During the last part of the game I took out my camera and snapped off a few shots of the girls when they weren't paying much attention to me. Since I was traveling & took it with film I didn't develop it until I got home in May. That is when I noticed that Sarah's lollipop (and hand) looked like she was lighting up a cigarette. Note: I do not condone or support smoking in anyway, especially not by children. This is NOT a cigarette, nor was it meant to be one. I simply thought it LOOKED like one after the fact.

since the starting blocks are in the shallow end, we couldn't use them for the Corporate Challenge - too much risk of someone diving too deep and hitting their head

I shot this picture in 2008

Much better results on the second attempt. I've replaced all the injector O-rings as well as the two on the fuel pressure regulator and that's sorted the leak out. Visually the old ones looked the same with no flat spots but when you cut them off they had no elasticity left.

I ran it for about 25 minutes and brought the engine up to temp. The thermostat opened at ~98 degrees but the fan never cut in at the lower temp. I suspect this is because the top of the rad is not full so the sensor wasn't fully immersed. I'll top it up and try again. I did notice the engine bogged for half a second when manually switching the fan on, not sure what that's all about. Main thing was that none of the coolant hoses were leaking.

My rev counter is still not working but all other gauges seemed ok, oil warning lamp went out straight away as did the charge lamp.

I'll have to fire a question off to the place I bought my gauges from to see if they have any ideas. The pulse signal from the ECU is around 36 Hz when settled into the low idle which is much higher that the 10Hz I'd expect to get from the crank sensor when idling around 600rpm. There is power at the gauge but the only time the needle moves is a wild fluctuation when cranking at start up. Even with the high pulse reading I'd still expect the revs to read off at ~2100rpm rather than no activity at all.

Submitted for MSH November: "spring."

After the heavy rainfall a couple of weeks ago we spotted these tiny toads that were everywhere. So tiny. A gentle reminder that everything starts small.
