Just got a Nikon FE and shot a roll of HP5+ to try it out. All came out a little grainy as I exposed at ISO800 and it was a very grey, misty day.

I had a big camera-selling splurge back at the beginning of the year. My workhorse camera until that time had been a Mamiya C220 with three lenses. Lovely camera, much featured in this photostream, but I'm not really a huge fan of square format. So it went, with its prism finder and paramender, to a chap in Hampshire. I also parted company with my Fuji GA645Zi, an eccentric medium format point-and-shoot, which was bought by a Spanish bank manager. Several lesser cameras and a number of lenses went in the same purge.

Heh-heh ...what to buy with the proceeds? Not a bad problem to have. Initially tempted by a Bronica ETRS (Mrs B has one she no longer uses but ...if you can understand... I had to have my own), I decided instead to buy this Mamiya M645 1000S, which came with wide-angle and telephoto lenses, but no standard. When another camera of the same family, the basic M645, came up on eBay, and still with a healthy credit balance in my Paypal account, I bought it for its standard lens. Both cameras had metered prisms, but it was immediately obvious that the meter wasn't working on the second camera. I finally got around to sending it off to be fixed, but it came back as irreparable, having unique parts now unobtainable. Oh well, not a disaster. Presumably the finder from the 1000S would work on the M645, but I prefer to regard the second camera as having an unmetered prism and to use it with a hand-held meter. Even an unmetered prism beats a back-to-front chimney-finder.

Medium-format SLRs such as these, the various Bronicas, the Pentax 645s and ...daddy of them all... the Hasselblad, are among the ugliest of cameras in my view. But it's results that count and results are jolly nice. This photo of the M645 1000S was taken with the M645. The latter lacks the seldom-necessary 1/1000th speed and without its meter is actually somewhat simpler to use. I think I prefer it to the more sophisticated camera. The film-advance and re-cocking action is nice, and makes a pleasingly solid sound. They are awkward cameras to handle. There have been many accidental exposures as I've turned the camera in my hands and touched one of the shutter-release buttons. There is a shutter lock that prevents this ...if you remember to use it. Beware of carrying the camera in your car. If it is not in a bag it will roll off the seat and thud to the floor every time you brake. If you put it on the floor it will roll around in the footwell. I retained my Mamiya C220's hand grip, which fits, and makes these cameras much easier to carry.

Portreath harbour on kodak 2238. Definitely best metered for the shadows at the expense of the highlights, massive detail and contrast available with the right exposure. I meter at iso16 , rodinal stand developed. Strictly speaking the film deserves to be shot with a tripod, especially when using a telephoto as a couple of these were. Quite a clinical look but i should imagine printed BIG it could be spectacular.
