It's another 100 degree day here in sunny Pleasanton (mid-May - pah) so I thought I'd enjoy the garden this morning before it got too hot. Seemingly I got too close and so I interrupted his morning sunbathing session.... He doesn't look too pleased about it either, but as he walked off towards the cherry tree one of the local mockingbirds spotted him and gave chase....

This is the other regular female squirrel visitor, a little shy compared to the one who likes to eat out of my hand. She seems to be dominant, so she is probably older.

OK Buzz, Zephyr, pay attention. See this? This is a squirrel. This is a cute little critter, I agree, but this cute critter is eating us out of all our bird food. One of your duties, and a requirement for your next meal, is that you keep the yard free of these cute critters. Especially in summer. In winter I don't mind if they eat a little bird food, but in summer there is plenty of food for them elsewhere.
So get out there! Do your job! Chase these cute critters away!!!
(It's weird, the dogs used to go nuts about the squirrels, but this summer they've quit chasing them and the squirrels are really everywhere. I think the squirrels bought them off).

An outtake from the book Prairie: A Natural History, by Candace Savage. I was principal photographer. The designer went with a different shot of the same squirrel, but I prefer this one. Photographed at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, in the Hill Country north of San Antonio, Texas. I camped there for a few days and found it... well, enchanting.
