The birds make a mess of the seeds and bread. Then the squirrels come along and clean it all up. Pretty much completely except for the smudge on the end of his nose. :-)
I am sure you will share my horror and disgust to learn that vandals have shot several of these delightful animals.
A ranger told us about this and even showed us pellets embedded in the trees .
Just cannot understand the mind-set of such evil people. so hope the authorities eventually catch the culprits.
We were richly entertained by these squirrels who almost mocked my efforts by being constantly on the move.
Do so hope you can share and enjoy what we saw that morning.
This is a gray squirrel - or a grey squirrel, if you like. I am uploading it for my friend, Ann. Ann has names for the squirrels that visit her garden. She also has great pictures of them and is certainly worth a visit!
I, on the other hand, don't give them names. Well, in fact, I do. However the names don't bear repeating and would probably get me deleted from Flickr. In polite circles, this one is called "Nuisance".
He visits the tree in front of my dining room window quite regularly and looks longingly at the bird feeders that hang in front of the window. He sometimes tries to jump over to the feeders. He always lands on the ground. Sometimes he goes up on the roof and tries to slide down the aircraft cable that secures the bird feeders. He always slides very smartly past the bird feeders and lands on the ground.
I keep hoping that, one day, I will look out the window and see an ever increasing mound of squirrel carcasses on the ground under the window. So far, all I see are teeny tiny little footprints.. But we all need hobbies - especially in the winter during income tax season.
Isn't he just sooo cute?
This bunch of cute squirrels were all stuffed in a basket in an enclosure at the Riverside animal centre. There were other buckets and hanging baskets but this particular bucket seemed to be the place to be. (Sorry about the quality, but i had to shoot through two layers of wire and was well into digital zoom)
This guy would not shut up because a black squirrel was taking his place at the bird feeder in our yard.
squirrel standing on tree and behind are branches with ice, thorns and brier while it there is falling little snow
We spent last week up on the Durham moors hoping to get some wildlife shots but the weather was overcast and mist most days.
On the high tops the snowdrifts towered above the car and although the rods had been cleared they were mostly single track in places. A magical world for us who come from the south where we escaped most of these terrible conditions.
Spotting wildlife was not too easy but we managed to spot some and I clicked as usual
We sat in a car park and were entertained by red squirrels which was a real treat.
Simply sat in the car and clicked top my hearts content - what a day.
Two gentlemen drove into the car park and gently mocked my husband who had placed a log hoping the animals would use it and yes they did but the chaps called the prop a 'mankie log' hence the title.
We all got some squirrel photographs,
It had been raining so I put some Cheerios in an empty planter on my patio. Having many squirrels in my yard it didn't take long for one to hop up for a snack.
Fox squirrels are common visitors to my backyard, eating peanuts and seeds. They are pretty cute and fun to watch. Sciurus niger, Sciuridae. Central IL, Winter 2012.
These shots are all from a snowy morning in December.
Haven't been out lately...sick with bronchitis AGAIN! This was taken a week or so ago at Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens in Claremont. I finally had the energy to download some images today.
Caught this little squirrel taking his morning bath. A clean squirrel is a happy squirrel!
