One of my favourite portraits is from around 1990, taken on a 35mm film camera with a 135mm lens. The original image was printed in my home darkroom on Agfa paper, either Portriga Rapid or Record Rapid; I cannot remember which and finished in a bath of selenium toner.
MY JOURNEY TO THE HOME DARKROOM.
One Saturday in 1979, I visited Cecil Hughson's photo hardware shop in Lerwick, the main town in the Shetland Islands, where I was working at the time; I emerged with a complete Paterson 'home' darkroom kit (chemicals and paper excluded) comprising:
- Paterson Universal 35mm Enlarger with 50mm lens
- Paterson Adjustable Printing Easel
- Universal Developing Tank and Spiral
- Set of three 8 x 10 trays
- Paterson safe light
- 3 measuring cylinders
- Chemical Mixer
- Thermometer
- Print tongues
- Pair of film clips
- Paterson Film Squeegee
- Paterson Micro Focus Finder
In those days, my 'darkroom' was the kitchen I shared with my flatmate Fraser on Thorfinn Street. What follows here is a journey down memory lane into a world largely (but not entirely) gone from view, where the terms used will resonate with a few and mean nothing to the many.
I had entered into the mysterious world of the darkroom - I had developed my first black & white film - I had experienced the wonder of seeing (by the dim red glow of the safe light) my first image magically appear from a blank sheet of printing paper submerged in developing fluid. The learning curve had begun, and through time and much trial and error, I gradually honed my skills in printing from B&W negatives. In succeeding years, I upgraded to a Durst enlarger, which allowed for medium-format and 35mm negative carriers. Also, a Gene Nocon f-stop timer linked to the enlarger facilitated a more advanced timing method for burning and dodging techniques than simply counting one elephant, two elephants, three elephants, etc. Other names entered my darkroom vocabulary:
FILM such as - Ilford FP4, Ilford HP5 and Ilford Pan and equivalent rated Agfapan films.
PAPER such as - Ilford Multigrade Resin Coated; also evocatively named Fibre-Based papers from Agfa like Portriga Rapid and Record Rapid.
CHEMISTRY, such as film developers - Agfa Rodinal and Ilford ID-11; Agfa paper developers Neutol NE / WA and Ilford Multigrade; followed sequentially by Ilford Ilfostop and Ilford Hypam Fixer.
TONERS such as Sepia and Selenium, the latter being my favourite.
My bible in those days was a book called 'CREATIVE ELEMENTS: Landscape Photography—Darkroom Techniques' by Eddie Ephraums; I still have his signed copy. My darkroom supplies came from a firm called 'Silverprint'. ***
Sadly, after 25 years, my association with 'the B&W darkroom' ended abruptly with selling my film cameras in 2004 and purchasing my first digital camera, a Kodak DCS-14n. Digital appeared to be the future, so I gave away my darkroom paraphernalia to a local school, but out of sentiment, I kept the original developing trays from 1979. The link was broken, but even today, I can recall the distinctive smell of those darkroom chemicals and, perhaps more importantly, the sense of fulfilment I felt upon creating the finished print.
Today, my journey continues via a different route, namely, Lightroom, Photoshop, and an Epson printer.
*** Regretfully, Silverprint are no longer in business; as I understand they went into Administration in 2023.
The posters have been printed with no problems at all and turned out better than I could have expected. Now the CDs begin printing with the first color on the inside going over very well. I printed the CDs three at a time.
Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord Printing
If you’re looking for lanyards for your business, event or as promotional goods we have a number of types of Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord to choose from. Each is made from polyester, but the way the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord is made differs, depending on the final finish you are looking for.
Flat polyester lanyards are some of the most popular in our range. The polyester is woven into a long length, which is then cut using a hot knife that seals the cut ends to prevent fraying. You can personalize the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord by choosing the color of the material. Your own logo and artwork can be printed onto the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord to customize it using the advance printing technique. The benefit of the flat polyester Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord is that you can choose a width of up to 25mm, giving you a broad canvas on which to promote your company / Organization.
Flat weave lanyards are manufactured from high quality polyester and customized using your artwork and text, which is woven into the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord rather than printed. This makes it perfect for harsh environments, where the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord is likely to be subject to heavy wear and tear.
If you’re looking for a more economical choice, choose our tubular polyester lanyard. They are made from the same high quality polyester as our standard lanyards but the material is tube stitched. These lanyards can also be advance printed techniques with your own logo.
For a more luxurious finish, the satin woven lanyards are made using a finer weave, which gives a smooth, shiny finish. Once again, your logo and choice of text can be printed onto the Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord to personalize it to your business or event.
Advance printing is a technique used on the majority of our custom lanyards. This is an age-old technique that uses ink and a stencil, supported by a woven mesh. Ink is moved across the advance using a squeegee-type blade, forcing the ink through the open mesh and onto the material beneath. To create images with multiple colors, it’s necessary to create layers as only one color can be printed at a time. Many items of clothing are printed using our advance print technique.
If you have multi-colored logos and/or want to include vibrant images with a photo-quality resolution, a dye sublimation Lanyard / Ribbon / Strip / Rope / Cord would be the perfect choice. Dye sublimation is a method of computerized printing that uses a combination of heat and pressure to permanently transfer dyes into the fabric as a gas, which then solidifies and becomes part of the fiber of the lanyard.

I'm going to start a new set of photos called #36. My negative holders hold 35 frames of film amd it's just easier to snip off the last image.
So, off of my last roll this was my last image shot at lunch today.
The problem I had with the last set of negatives did not appear with this set. The light leak was most certainly from the dark room. Now that I know this I will be taking precautions to prevent that from happening again.
A couple of things about this roll ...
First off, lots of spots on the roll from drying. I've got to find out why. I've changed from what I was doing before and PhotoFlo is the last thing to touch the negatives. I run the strip between my fingers to act as a squeegee ... I don't think I'll do that on the next strip to see if that makes a difference.
Also, this roll I shot primarly using a gray card to set the exposure. I am very happy with the results - although now I need to work on contrast.

Prepping a new screen for the images. I use Speedball Diazo photo emulsion and of course wear rubber gloves.

I used Creative JumpStart techniques from the mono-printing video and a squeegee from the squeegee fun video. The bright pop of colors are from Luminarte Silks Acrylic Glazes (Sunflower, Jasmine and Pretty Periodot). I was happy the Silks worked out so well on the areas squeegeed thru the textured modeling paste!
