The first of a short series of photos I took last weekend. First time I took my camera out in a while and took the opportunity to photograph the spring scenery through Somerville and Cambridge. Also my first time photographing flowers.
Welcome, sweet Springtime! We greet thee in song,
Murmurs of gladness fall on the ear,
Voices long hushed now their full notes prolong
Echoing far and near.
Sunshine now wakes all the flow'rets from sleep,
Joy-giving incense floats on the air;
Snow-drop and primrose both timidly peep,
Hailing the glad new year.
Balmy and life-breathing breezes are blowing,
Swiftly to nature new vigor bestowing.
Ah, how my heart beats with rapture anew,
As earth's fairest beauties again meet my view.
Sing then, ye birds: raise your voices on high;
Flow'rets awake ye! Burst into bloom!
Springtime is come! and sweet Summer is nigh,
Sing then, ye birds, O sing!

Pulmonarias, or lungworts, are perennials that bloom very early in spring and have interesting foliage from spring through fall. The leaves grow in basal rosettes and in some types are marked with silver-white splotches. The flowers may be blue or pink and in some cases start out pink and fade to blue, so both colors appear at once on the same plant.

Amazing that the trees could have so many different colors in early spring! Darned those electrical lines, though!

I took this photo in early May, looking down a side street near my home. The springtime green looked so fresh and vibrant.
Stillwater County. Springtime is accessed from Exit 400 off of I-90, west of Columbus. Sited along the former Northern Pacific line (now Montana Rail Link), Springtime had a post office from 1916 (August 11) to 1932 (June 15). Nelson Miller served as the first postmaster. The name was chosen by the developers of the townsite.

Spring wildflowers, hills, and the Carrizo Plain
In the spring following a wet winter, you can often find excellent wildflower displays all over the state of California — from the deserts to the Sierra foothills and just about anywhere else with some suitable land. I photographed these in hills of south-central California that lie between the Great Central Valley and the valleys that run just inland of the coast ranges.
It had been an excellent year for rainfall here — after five years of crushing drought California had a single winter of record-setting precipitation. The plants took advantage of this, and in many places managed to produce extensive wildflower displays. A few of us hiked up into these hills, and photographed back toward the valley below and the setting sun.
