I had the WEST SIDE (PROVOLONE CHEESE, LETTUCE, AVOCADO, RED ONION & CHILI KETCHUP)
Blogged with recipe at my Vox.
I tried to make martabak telur (Indonesian eggroll) the way my mom makes them. Something must have gone wrong in the folding because now they look like lumpia!
It was good anyway, although it was naked (no acar to go with it) and we ate the entire batch in one go since the misfolding makes them bite-sized.
Avocados and carrots aren't traditional in Khmer spring rolls; they're a great addition though. I prefer shredded chicken over pork, but I only had pork.
I believe spring rolls are originally Vietnamese. Khmer also has a version. Japanese has the summer roll, which is quite similar. That's where I got the idea of carrots and avocado from. Hehe.
Ground-beef-filled spring roll with cheese sauce from Susur's booth at the Pride street fair. It was OK but not as good as the salad.

FRIED SPRING ROLLS IN VIETNAM
The fried version with minced pork is called imperial rolls or spring rolls chả giò (southern Vietnam), nem cuốn, chả cuốn or Nem rán (northern Vietnam). They are often called "egg rolls" in Western countries, which is a misnomer. Central Vietnam has its own version of a fried roll called Ram. Ram is always made from whole shell-on shrimp or chopped de-shelled shrimp and some green onions, wrapped in rice paper and deep fried. Ram, like most specialty food items from central Vietnam, are not widely available in Vietnamese restaurants overseas.
A Vietnamese imperial roll is different from a Chinese spring roll in that it is typically smaller and contains ground or chopped meats/seafood such as pork, crab, shrimp, chicken, taro or cassava, glass noodles, wood-ear fungi or oyster mushrooms, and shredded carrots. Rice paper is traditionally used as the wrappers. However, there are several Vietnamese restaurants in western countries that may use Chinese spring roll wrappers due to the unavailability of rice paper or ease of use.
Spring rolls or summer rolls are a Vietnamese delicacy known as gỏi cuốn. Depending on region, salad rolls were made differently. Some vegetarian families make vegetarian spring rolls rather than meat spring rolls. However, the typical ingredients include slivers of cooked pork (most often cha pork sausages), shrimp, sometimes chicken or tofu, fresh herbs like basil or cilantro, lettuce, cucumbers, sometimes fresh garlic, chives, rice vermicelli, all wrapped in moistened rice paper. A typical gỏi cuốn may contain boiled pork, boiled rice noodle, cucumber, carrot and herb only. Fresh Vietnamese spring rolls can be made at home or found at Vietnamese restaurants and some grocery stores. They are served at room temperature with dipping sauce. Nước chấm, tương xào, or a hoisin peanut sauce are all common dipping sauces. A typical hoisin dipping sauce includes chili, hoisin sauce, peanut butter and sugar. A standard nước mắm pha (nước chấm) dipping sauce is composed of fish sauce, lime, garlic, sugar, and chilies or simply fish sauce, sugar and vinegar.

The battered beancurd pastry skin was a bit oily.
The filling was a bit watered down with too much flour, but The streak of seaweed made it look more interesting.
Renee thought they tasted like 福建鸡卷 Hokkien-style Chicken Rolls.

I tried the [relatively] new Chinese restaurant, Le Tasty, on Franklin downtown for the first time the other day. I had been somewhat skeptical, perhaps due to their funny name. I was pleasantly surprised.
We enjoyed spring rolls, with a way above average dipping sauce. We had a pretty standard hot and sour soup, and a lovely fish dish with sweet vinegar sauce. Chicken fried rice with little bits of salty fish was excellent.
I will definitely be returning. Oh! They're open until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday, open for lunch and dinner on Sunday, and they deliver. Hooray!

The bombdiggitiest spring rolls I've ever had! The secret sauce is KILLER as is the fried chive inside the roll. Genius!
