At this hour, even cranes look poetic. The haze glows orange, softening the concrete. It might be weather, it might be smog. Either way, the city relaxes. You can almost believe in something better. Santiago at sunset always feels like it’s about to forgive you.

Made by some column sorting and row resizing form spreadsheet of Love for today's ds106 Daily Create:
Use the Pixel Spreadsheet tools from Think Maths to convert a photo or image into an Excel Spreadsheet– it puts a red, green, blue value in a cell, and zoomed out you can see how that forms a photo. Making one is simple. A monkey can do that. How can you transform the image using Excel tools? For the example above, multiple columns were sorted to make it more “glitch” like. How else might you manipulate the numbers to make something different? Or make it change appearance at different zoom levels.

I keep a spreadsheet of what animals I see each month not only in the parks I visit but in places I've lived. During our 16 years in the urban neighborhood of our Portland house I recorded 10 bird species for the month of March. In a few days at our new house in Scottsdale I've seen 13! Including this lovely male cardinal who sang to me on the day the mover's arrived with our belongings. He serenaded Ellie and I this morning as we relaxed on the back porch. Verdin were building a nest in the buckhorn cholla in the common area below the house. Lesser goldfinches flitted about, curve-billed thrashers called out. A pair of Gambel's quail fed near the house as Sam and Trixie watched eagerly from the windows. Phainopepla, mourning doves, house finches, house sparrows, gila woodpeckers, a pair of Harris's hawks soaring overhead. I stood dumbfounded watching a robin, a bird I've known from everywhere I've lived but had no idea lived in Arizona. Yesterday on my first commute home from a work a roadrunner darted across the road (with no coyote in hot pursuit).
With all these birds so close at hand I may not go hiking anymore! (Just kidding)
Clay Christensen giving a talk titled "The Capitalist's Dilemma" at the RSA in London. It was a fascinating talk about the different types of innovation and how finance and the spreadsheet might be favouring short-term efficiency innovations over longer term empowering (and job-creating) innovations.

I've been crunching numbers today instead of looking for insects and wildflowers. I collected data about San Marcos Pass rainfall from the Santa Barbara County Hydrology website. I got the data into Excel, and then rearranged it a bit to show Jan-Dec calendar years rather than the usual Sep-Aug rain years.
This chart shows total rainfall per calendar year (Jan-Dec) on San Marcos Pass since records began in 1966. If you look at the bar for 2013 on the very right, you will see that this is indeed the driest calendar year by quite a margin. We had just 7.3 inches of rain in all of 2013, well below our average of almost 35 inches. The next lowest is 12.6 inches in 1989. No wonder it feels so dry! I've seen in the news that this is the driest year ever recorded in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Well, it is on San Marcos Pass as well.
There is still hope - see my [Previous] chart.
To help keep track of everyone's order, I made use of Google Spreadsheets. There are multiple tabs, but in this is the main one where I tracked everyone's payment and shipping status.

Rowallane gardens today - in the walled garden. Of the several different helebores in flower, this was by far the most popular one with the bees today. So worth taking note of if you are looking for a helebore that is good for bees. And it is a great looking flower too.

What does the fact that I am excited about getting a mouse say about my rapid assimilation into corporate culture?
1000 miles complete! This last run was from my house up around the trails on Cougar Mountain, 9.8 miles. Whew, I honestly didn't think I would make it over the course of the last 6 weeks, as I had fallen behind, but I persevered and pushed through, even with a 22 mile day and getting my car busted into. Though honestly the last 100 miles or so were more about the miles than getting out. I am healthier than when I began, fitter too. I have only lost around 10 pounds, mostly because I love to eat still. :) Though I have firmed up and lost some more inches. I have only been running for a little over a year (thanks to my neighbor) and I enjoy trail running, street running not so much. Last year I did a 1000 miles as well, but this year was much more of an accomplishment to me, since I didn't bike any (that I counted), as opposed to last year when I biked 430+ miles of the 1000.
Some Stats :
25 miles - Paddling a Canoe
187 miles - Street running
21 miles - Snowshoeing
336 miles - Trail Running
350 miles - Hiking
