For those who remember the movie “Best In Show”, Chattaflats did its own remake today…
30 years is a very long time to be out of the Obedience ring… There may have been some brain changes over those years. Possibly I entered too many dogs. I needed a spreadsheet.
The Chattaflats crew of 4 girls did well this weekend. Saturday was the smooth sailing day. There was rushing around, making sure to enter the ring with the right dog, and, of course, nerves. Ellie at 9 ½ years did well but was NQ in Novice B with a second command. Why she is 9 ½ years and just entering Obedience is a story for another day. Chelsea is continuing to have a great Spring and was 4th in Novice B with a score of 191! And, Frankie took a 3rd in Beginner Novice B at 195! Megan qualified in Beginner Novice B and was in 5th place with a 193. Gary who has never entered an Obedience trial ran Megan. He belonged in Beginner Novice A. He did not know his weekend work schedule by the closing date so I had to enter Megan in Beginner Novice B in case I would be the handler. I really tried to give Gary a lesson on how to get through Beginner Novice on Wednesday evening. There was no lack of instruction for him before he entered the ring – and, after he left the ring - due to my Obedience friends, too. It was great that he and Megan qualified. Only issue was that I put Chelsea back in the car before the ribbons. Several people corrected me. Judge said to come up with a “pretend” Flat-Coat. It had been a long time.
Maybe my problem Sunday was that I woke up thinking this is a piece of cake. I’m definitely back in the swing of things with this Obedience stuff. Wrong! I needed to arrive by 7:30. Gary decided to sleep in as his ring time was 10 am. Novice B was right on time at 8 am. I entered the ring with Ellie and she did well. I was pretty happy. I came out of the ring with Ellie. I went back into the ring with Ellie for the long sits and downs. I came out of the ring with Ellie. I switched Ellie for Chelsea out in the back parking lot. I entered the ring with Chelsea. I knew she did great. I left the ring with Chelsea. Leaving the ring with Chelsea I remembered that I needed to get Ellie from the car so she could go back into the ring for ribbons. I saw Gary arriving and his look said “Do I have to go right back to the car?” He would have but I couldn’t do it to him. So I quickly handed him Chelsea and ran out to get Ellie.
With all these going into the rings and coming out of the rings and back and forths to the car, I believe I must have had a moment of confusion. I totally forgot something. Something very important! As I’m approaching the car, I hear a friend screaming for me to get back into the building. I look at her and she screams “The sits and downs!” I scream. I throw her the leash and tell her to get Ellie. I run to the building. Friends grab me just inside and ask me if I’ve had a brain fart! They hold me back and tell me not to say a word. Everything is under control. Aren’t friends wonderful!
Inside the building – while I’m outside the building: The judge is calling for the sits and downs. He calls for #155! Everyone looks for me. Gary says that I would be back in a second. But, the sits and downs must go on. And, I’m not there. Friends gathered around Gary and said “You’re going to have to take her in!” “You have to go in!” It became obvious to them before it did to Gary that he would be going in for sits and downs with Chelsea. He told me later that he could only think of the scene from “Best In Show” as he walked Chelsea into the ring. The judge was very understanding because Gary didn’t even have the armband. Actually, he didn’t even know the #. Friends knew the number! The friends holding me back did give updates: Long sit over and good. Long down. She’s staying down. Return. Whew!
I’m allowed in as Gary’s exiting the ring with Chelsea. He has the biggest smile on his face. I’m going to keep him! The qualifiers are asked to return to the ring. Then we are asked to leave the ring. There’s a runoff. #145 is asked to return to the ring and do an off leash heeling pattern. Then #155! Oh, my! Chelsea is back in the ring! Chelsea comes out of the ring after her heeling. All the qualifiers enter the ring again. In I go with Ellie and Chelsea. First place is announced with a 195 – Chelsea! I let Chelsea down. I don’t know what I would have done without Gary and my friends. Thank you.

For a third time, the judge asked if there was anyone missing. I did not dare say a thing! In fact, nothing would have come out my mouth even if I tried. Fortunately, Gary ran in at the last minute. If there was an award for bumbling handlers, we earned it! A great outcome of the weekend is that Gary wants to pursue a Novice title with Megan.
Next stop is Wisconsin where we are entered in Field, Conformation, Rally, and Obedience! I am taking applications for a Brain Assistant. If anyone runs into Gary and he says he’s “put quite a few miles on the old odometer”, please do not tell me!

Pollen load clearly visible- light brown or caramel coloured loads. In full bloom mid winter. This bush is about 2 meters from a bee hive so it is the equivalent of a corner shop if the conditions are suitable for the bees nipping out for some forage.
I am going to do oxalic acid treatment on the hives next week but judging from the amount of pollen that is being brought in the bees are still raising brood so this will make the treatment less effective.
