Oregon Coast Lith Print. I thought I had previously posted a scan of a traditional print from this negative. Nope, the other image is from a 35mm slr equipped with a telephoto plastic lens.

My fooling around with lith printing has been a fascinating project. Split tones, posterization effects, and each result is something of a surprise.

Number 356 of my 365 photo challenge - A cross-processed and split-toned, long exposure, stitched, panoramic, landscape image of a natural dam from fallen trees in front of a waterfall in a forest near Aucterarder in Perthshire, Scotland.

To get to these falls required me to go well off piste. This was a tricky trek, owing to how saturated the ground is. Climbing up a large and steep embankment, only to have to climb down a similar one and then repeat, was hard work. But I think it was worth the risk and effort.

WEEK 11Technical: Split ToneSplit Tone is an editing technique where the shadows are toned one color, and the highlights a second color. Split toning is often used with color grading in the media to give a scene a desired look and feel.

A Bride and Groom await their photographer on the patio of the Palace of King Charles V of Spain. Located in the southern Spanish City of Granada, the Palace and surrounding Alhambra complex provided a very grand backdrop to their photographs...and yes, I did manage to stay out of shot when their Photographer arrived :)

Processed to mono/split-toned in LR.

Number 316 of my 365 photo challenge - A split-toned, macro image of some rough looking fungus growing at the base of an old tree stump.

This was snapped just before the weather started to move in properly. It's grim out there now. Storms are no place for a camera unless in a rain coat and pointed at massive waves breaking against the rocks! ;-)

You should know where this is by now....

the lesser spotted pavlova cloud

Two small pieces of sea glass from the local beach mounted on a gloss black floor tile and illuminated by natural window light. Nine images processed as a focus stack in Helicon Focus. Cropping in LIightroom. Dust and speck removal in Photoshop. Conversion to mono in Silver Efex Pro 2. Split toning and sharpening in Lightroom. HMM!

A thing-a-ma-bob or a what-cher-may-call-it.

With a bit of split toning to make it interesting.

It is a cut glass/crystal knife stand that was my Mum's and I thought it could make an interesting subject.

Another composition from my trip to the Blackwater Falls State Park in West Virginia.

Lucked out to be visiting Milwaukee and have all my gear in the car when I heard there was heavy late afternoon/early evening fog on the lakefront. Shot at the McKinley Park Marina.

Down & Dirty:

Five exposures, one stop apart blended together in Photomatix, saved as a .TIFF and imported into Lightroom. Edited a copy in Photoshop. Set B&W points. Added a black layer (blend mode: color burn) and white layer (blend mode: color dodge) and painted in white on the Color Burn layer to bring out saturation/shadows and white on the Color Dodge layer to bring out highlights. Duplicated the background layer and made a Levels Adjustment layer and pushed the white output to enhance the fog/mist. Masked out areas that didn't have fog or look good with it. Duplicated background layer and changed to Luminosity blend mode and sharpened using an edge mask and USM. Backed off opacity and brought it back up 10% at a time until it looked good to me. Converted to B&W with Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer, saved back into LR, applied a strong contrast curve, bumped the Clarity slider applied the split toning effect and added the vignetting.

Posed street portrait from Glasgow, Scotland. Captured in a sequence of shots used for my 100 Strangers project, this is a previously unused image of Kat that I captured. I wanted to revisit this with more extensive post-production techniques.

Primary editing in Lightroom and then exported to Photoshop for extensive, though not necessarily needed, skin retouching using frequency separation techniques. Added a slight tough of split tone processing with orange in the highlights and teal in the shadows too, together with a slight alteration of her hair colour to balance with that.

I'll be revisiting a few of my strangers using some new techniques which is always good practice in processing skills. Enjoy!

Grey fog of an autumn dawn

Something slightly different today, from the beach, it’s been suggested by a couple of my contacts that I should try some mono work, well I agree, I have been toying with the idea, while I’m not quite happy with the results, after a drink the other night I remember thinking that this split toned shot worked for me, in the cold light of day, I’m not sure, so I’ll share and see what you think...

It’s got some cloud in shot, including that shark shaped cloud, do you see that or is it just my imagination... either way I like the reflections and the subsurface details, hope you like.

And to anyone who does Sliders Sunday, HSS! To you, I think split tone, curves, and contrast possibly applies but I wasnt sure. I've never repeated a frame on flickr so far, being so trigger happy there never seems to be too much of a shortage of them... But on this one I might do a full colour version down the line, just so you know!

Thanks you so much for viewing. Have a great day!
