One more nail in the coffin,

one more shadow 'cross the sun.

One more hollow holy midnight,

no more chances left to run.

WEEK 11 Technical: Split Tone | Split Tone is an editing technique where the shadows are toned one color, and the highlights a second color. Split toning is often used with color grading in the media to give a scene a desired look and feel.

In this photo, blue was used for the highlights and orange for the shadows.

It was foggy today so I decided to go out and try to get some interesting fog-bound images. Thinking I might be able to get above it and shoot a fog covered landscape I went up Mow Cop. But it was thicker there than lower down. So instead I started shooting elements of the landscape through the fog, trying to make the fog work for me like it would with stage lighting . It kinda worked and the concept inspired this small collection of magenta/blue split toned images. Some are almost entirely done in Lightroom and some I took to Photoshop to do work on levels before going back to lightroom for the final contrast, vignette and split toning. These images are in the Gritstone Trail collection because the castle is actually on the Gritstone Trail.

This image was edited almost entirely in Lightroom (beta 4) with only a short trip to Photoshop to remove sensor dust.

More shots from the same walk are available in my Gritstone Trail Set.

And you can find out more about how I produce my images by watching my free weekly video podcast, PhotoWalkthrough, where I teach photo post processing.
