When I was watching the Olympic gymnasts arms outstretched on rings, it reminded me of Bearded Tits. They frequently do the splits supporting their body weight with legs straight out clinging to reeds. I very rarely see Bearded Tits as they have a highly restricted distribution in Britain, and none of their favoured locations are remotely near to where I live in the Pennines. To make matters worse they can be incredibly elusive even when you do visit a site for them. I didn't get a totally clear view of this male through the reeds but I liked the photograph because it catches the sense of what it is like to see these birds in the wild.
My first ever bird book was the Observer's Book of Birds bought for me when I was just five years old. In this book is a wonderful painting of "Bearded Tit or Reedling" by J.G.Keulemans where it shows the male sheltering a female under his wing. As I grew older I thought this was an odd illustration as I had never heard of any bird putting its arm around another bird. But about twenty years ago I was watching a female Bearded Tit perched on a reed stem when a male flew in and landed nearby. He slowly inched his way along the stem until he was right next to her then raised his wing and put it round her. I could not believe it as it was exactly like the unbelievable painting in the Observer's Book. Here's a link to Keuleman's wonderful picture from the Observer's Book and take a look at the beautiful Flowering Rush in the background too: s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/da/cd/ed/dacded6e9e81e2...
I mentioned my sighting of cuddling Beardies to several people who see them far more frequently than I do yet none of them have ever witnessed it. I could not find mention in BWP (Birds of the Western Palearctic) but I did see the following in Witherby's Handbook of British Birds: "Habit of pairs roosting with female sheltering underwing of male noted by several observers in captive birds."

NS D01 splits the old searchlight signals at Abel as the train enters the passing siding for a meet with 33J. The new Safetrans signals are already in place here, so the searchlights are living on borrowed time. During my travels yesterday, I also saw new Safetrans signals sitting on the ground at Riverton (DH 407.1) and East Starne.

I'm not sure what this maneuver was all about but the web was really bouncing and it was hard to get a decent shot of it.

154 splits Control Point RPM (stands for Revolutions Per Minute since it’s the start of the BMW lead) on a seemingly normal Thursday morning on the Charlotte District. That was until right after the rear end passed me, when the train broke in half and bottled up traffic for over 2 hours due to it being on a single track section.
