The River Trent at Newark splits several times into smaller channels that all eventually recombine with the main river. The River Trent Waterfalls are grandly named but merely a series of weirs as one of the smaller branches spits from the main river. The split is a very photogenic place, with lots of trees crowding the banks.
This shot is taken from Longstone Bridge which crosses the channel and photo of the bridge will be posted soon.
Can you spot the canoeists?
Well this is what the Handbook of Birds of the World calls it but most other sources lump it with Green-barred Woodpecker (Colaptes melanochloros). Green-barred occurs across a wide area of eastern South America from Brazil down to Argentina, but HBW splits off the southernmost three subspecies as Golden-breasted Woodpecker (C.melanolaimus). Green-barred and Golden-breasted are very similar, but the latter does have a golden breast and is greener on the back, with less markings on the rump and tail. But they appear to interbreed where the two forms come together. For completeness this is subspecies nigroviridis photographed at Costanera Sur in northern Argentina. From the neck up it does look rather similar to Great Spotted Woodpecker, albeit looking a little jaundiced, but DNA has shown that it is closely related to Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus).

I had to laugh at this black flying fox. It's posture looked so uncomfortable. This bat was part of a large bat community in Yeppoon.
A Norfolk Southern C30-7 splits a pair of Conrail EMDs with an NS hopper train on the Reading Line in 1993.
The NS C30-7 and hopper train was just another interesting move on Conrail at the time, not a harbinger of things to come.
UP IG4SI splits away from TRRA territory at ‘Grand Jct’ while it rounds the curve under Chouteau Avenue, passing by the abandoned MoPac St. Louis Intermodal hub that sits right between Chouteau and the Wabash UD Line (Metrolink), the original crane and loading docks still remain along with a very faded MoPac Eagle billboard. Once Dupo was upgraded this facility was obsolete and was only used for storing cars there after, but I myself haven’t seen any cars there for a while now… UP now uses the trailer lot as a base for the UP Signal team.

In the depts of the Bensenville industrial district, MARC E9AM 91, still painted in its Burlington Northern "Hockey Stick" livery, sits in storage with a cut of retired Metra bi-level coaches in an industrial lead that splits off of the CPKC Northwest Bridge Subdivision behind Ace Metal Crafts Company. Even though this locomotive may look like a pile of vandalized rust now, MARC 91 was built nearby in the EMD LaGrange plant as CB&Q E8A 9973 in August 1953 as one of the many striking streamliners pumped out of the plant by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. The E8As powered passenger trains throughout the Burlington system until the Burlington Northern merger in 1970, and still served the BN and Amtrak on both freight and passenger service up into their rebuilds in the late 1970s by Morrison-Knudsen. CB&Q 9973, now BN 9973, was rebuilt by MK in May 1978 at their Boise shops into BN E9AM 9907, and operated on the then newly formed RTA commuter railroad, later Metra, along with the other E9AMs where they gained their fame running high-speed passenger trains on the Racetrack around the Chicago area in a flashy "Hockey Stick" livery with the iconic candy cane stripes on the nose. The E9AMs were finally retired in 1992 after a successful 4 decades of service, and were sent to Maryland to work on the MARC; a long ways from home rails. BN 9907 was renumbered to MARC 67, and worked around the MARC system up into the 1990s and early 2000s before getting replaced by newer up-to-date power. A few of the E9AMs, including the now renumbered MARC 91, ended up back in the Chicago area. Unfortunately, MARC 91 has since been completely gutted, and years of neglect has caused a horrible amount of corrosion to the body. Vandals have also damaged the locomotive throughout its years sitting in Bensenville. Although MARC 91 has miraculously made its way back to home territory, MARC 91's life has essentially came to an end sitting as a shell of its former self just a stone toss away from where it all began.

Already I miss watching the antics of Red-winged Blackbirds. I miss their song too. They seem to be among the first to arrive in the spring and they must be among the first to leave to return south. They've already been gone weeks ago.

I was going to call this 'Car Keys' and then realised that this isn't the case. The key is for the garage door, and the other items are the key fob and the car remote. OK, there is also an emergency key in the remote but I've not had to use that yet !
This is the quickest MM photo take to dat. Threw the keys onto the desk, grabbed the camera, and took a handheld exposure - asking for trouble there with both camera shake and focus being probable issues. So this is the result - verdict: could be worse!

Michigan is ranked fourth in the United States in participation in High School wrestling with more than 12,000 students throughout the state. The Palace of Auburn Hills is home to the nation's largest high school wrestling tournament with over 1,700 wrestlers and coaches from 450 high schools competing for 3 days to crown the best athlets in the state as champions.
A least bittern papa leaving the nest after feeding the young ones. According to the dude I was standing next to, the chicks are about 5 to 7 days old and haven't shown themselves yet. Mama and papa have been very busy bring food back to the nest though. These are tiny little herons. Seeing this guy fly this morning, his main body seemed to be about fist sized. Long neck though. These aren't often seen in the Phoenix area, but we've seen a couple broods this year. Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert, AZ
