When I was a girl, I worked for a museum with a large collection of Victorian hobby art. Most of this stuff was made by women, who had time and money on their hands.....as well as the blood of thousands of tiny living creatures.

Because tucked in with the hair wreaths, cabinet cards and pressed flowers were dozens of glass and crystal vitrines, each one containing some precious sparrow, songbird or titmouse, preserved for all time against dust and questing fingers.

But lo...these little things had revenge for all the hours that idle corseted ladies fussed over them, because the vast majority of them were dipped in an effective preservative made of Lead of Arsenic, in order to keep plumage shining and beaks bright.

THUS: My makeup series, paying homage to those lotus eaters of ornithological doom....those maidens and matrons de mortem.

Laudanum: tones of crushed velvet piano benches and the flavour of oversweet and slightly rotten citrus (yes, this IS what laudanum tastes of, I KNOW).

I loved spending my hours with them, maybe you will too.

Fava are the yellow split peas of Santorini. Here, they are pureed with red onion, garlic, red wine vinegar, and oregano, with lightly pickled onions on top.

My first attempt at making Pholourie -- I've always had it from Trini friends...A little ill-shaped, but I'll do better next time ^_^

Served with my favourite -- Tamarind Chutney ♥

7:30 this morning. Lots of ingredients, not a lot of dinner.

The Veggie Sampler from Fasika, a local Ethiopian restaurant. In Center: Misir Key Wot (red lentils cooked in Berbere sauce) and from L to R: Atkilt (cabbage, potatoes and carrots); Gomen (cooked greens); horseradish? puree at the top, some unknown potatoe-y thing; kik alicha wot (split peas cooked in curry and other spices); beets, and a salad with oil/spices dressing and peppers and tomatoes.

Really cheap, really tasty.

I was sick of the ham, so I bought some chicken :)

I really like the Shag hair for Culture Shock. And the Skull Bowl and Aviators from Deco....

6:00 PM. Delicious delicious split pea soup.

One good thing about a 3-day meeting. Lunch on the first day was at Champers on the wall, in Christchurch, Barbados. From the www.flickr.com/photos/chennette/378701945/ for our party. I had the Hot Split Pea Soup, Shrimp Curry and Double Chocolate Brownie. Delicious.

The soup was a bit spicy, with ginger and a touch of sweetness. Nice balance of flavours so it didn't taste like dhal :-)

Added to Friday Food Fiesta (HOT Week!) 17 March 2007

Ingredients:

1 cup of yellow split peas, soaked

2-2 1/2 cup of water

1 medium onion, chopped

1/2 lemon

olive oil

salt

Fava is a food classic from the Greek islands and works as a camping food as well. It's simple to prepare and delicious. The only con is that it might use up your fuel supplies as it requires long cooking. It is cooked in a non-sticking pot until the split-peas transform into a thick paste. Onions are added half way through or raw in the end. Serve with olive oil and some onions as garnish.

NB: You can substitute split peas with split fava beans.

Adapted slightly from Bob's Red Mill Everyday Gluten-Free, this split pea soup is simplicity at it's finest. A basically spiced puree of carrots, onions and split peas forms the perfect base for a ginger and cilantro pesto, which I swirled in instead of using as a topper because I was freezing portions for the week.

Homemade split pea soup was a wonderful lunch on a cold and wet day.

A (off menu) change from the incredible Parsley Root Soup I had on previous visits, but still as lovely in terms of textures and the revamp on the traditional split pea and ham soup. Fun.
