New spindles added to the collection this Christmas. On the left, a 36g zebrawood Bosworth- spins brilliantly and is really precision crafted. On the right, a 28g oak burl banded spindle by IST Crafts- a pretty fast spinner and well balanced.

We process spindle oil that is extensively used for lubricating spindles that are used in ring frames. This gives them a longer work life and low friction performance. Our spindle oil is also used because of its property of being a low staining oil.
My new spindle arrived yesterday! I got it from SevenYaks. It spins like a dream, so smooth. I wanted a spindle that can spin bulky weight yarn and this spindle is 3.1 ounces. I already spun up some great thick & thin bulky yarn on it, defiantly hard to get used to after spinning thin for so long.

There's some neat art on the base of this drop-spindle sculpture. I just wish they had some plaques explaining these, because I thought they were some kind of giant sun dial until it was explained to me. There's something written in Coast Salish on the bottom of the spindle, but I don't speak Coast Salish so I have no idea what the theme of this one is.
This Tibetan support spindle is approximately 12 1/2 inches long and weighs 38g (1.3 ounces). The Cherry whorl measures approximately 1.75 inches and has been attached to a Walnut shaft. The tip has been crafted from Honduran Rosewood.
Dave has crafted this stunning top whorl drop spindle from east Indian rosewood, goncalo alves and buffalo bone.
The east Indian rosewood whorl measures 2 1/4 inches in diameter, and has been accented with buffalo bone that Dave has carved with his signature leaf motif. The shaft, which measures 8 inches, was turned from goncalo alves. A brass hook has been added to the top.
This unique 1.4 ounce (41grams) moose antler bottom whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature rose and leaf motif. The whorl measures 1 7/8 inches in diameter, and the purpleheart shaft is 9 1/2 inches in length. A brass hook has been added to the top, and a steel bumper to the bottom.
Dave has crafted this lovely Russian support spindle from birdseye maple. He has inlayed the spindle with turquoise accents. This Russian support spindle measures 11 1/2 inches in length, and weights 52g (1.9 ounces). The matching lap bowl measures 6 1/2 inches in height, and is 2 3/4 in diameter.
I knit. I also burn vast quantities of things to DVDs on a regular basis. It is most economical for me to buy the 50 disc spindles from Makro but the DVDs actually get stored in appropriate folders depending on what is on them: TV series, Movies and Other. So I end up with empty spindles.
I now re-purpose these for yarn storage by cutting a hole in the top and storing a wound "cake" of wool inside (with the label where applicable.) This makes the wool vacume cleaner proof and also stops the balls from bouncing around during knitting by adding extra weight. The balls can then also be easily stacked and stored.
This is not my original idea, I did see it somewhere online but I can't remember where.
This unique 1.1 ounce (30gram) moose antler rim weighted top whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature leaf motif. The notched whorl measures 1 5/8 inches in diameter, and the cocobolo shaft is 7 1/4 inches in length. The bottom of the shaft has been shaped to accommodate a half hitch and a brass hook has been added to the top.
