Dave has crafted the whorl of this elegant Tibetan supported spindle from chechen wood. Chechen is also known as Caribbean rosewood. The cherry shaft measures 11 1/2 inches long, and the weight of this beautiful handspinning tool is 50 grams.
This is the Turkish spindle created by Ashford (New Zealand). It allows you to get a center pull ball when you are finished.

This unique 1.1 ounce (30gram) moose antler rim weighted top whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature leaf motif. The notched whorl measures 1 5/8 inches in diameter, and the cocobolo shaft is 7 1/4 inches in length. The bottom of the shaft has been shaped to accommodate a half hitch and a brass hook has been added to the top.

Honduras Rosewood and hard Maple. 31.7 g, height 24 cm. A lovely spindle made by Tibor Hijagos. Fiber mix from Wild Hair Studio. Gimli likes to be in stone and ice, but not for very long.

My first Bossies! On the left is a Canarywood Midi that weighs 24 grams (.84 ounces). On the right is a Bubinga Mini that weighs 20 grams (.7 ounces). Both have the standard Birch shaft.

Very cool restaurant in Berlin but tricky to find the door amongst old warehouses by the river. Took about 10 minutes!
This unique 1.4 ounce (41grams) moose antler bottom whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature rose and leaf motif. The whorl measures 1 7/8 inches in diameter, and the purpleheart shaft is 9 1/2 inches in length. A brass hook has been added to the top, and a steel bumper to the bottom.
A walk to get the paper and have a bit of exercise, on a very dull and damp day, but enlivened by going through Hill Hook Nature Reserve. I could do with retaking some of these when there is a bit more light to allow shorter shutter speeds and better depth of field.
Seeing the spindle took me back 70 years or so, to Blacklands Copse on the Isle of Wight, which was a regular walk as a small child, and my mother taught me about spindle trees. They were never like this though, and these seem to be garden centre varieties, not the true wild spindle.

the early days
I made a few brass spindles out of material for flute keys, one top-whorl and two low whorls. One is a support spindle (the one with the white angora).

This machine is used to drill the dog spike holes in the sleepers. The timber used for sleepers in Australia (usually red gum or box in Victoria) is too hard to drive a spike into without a pre-drilled hole.

We process spindle oil that is extensively used for lubricating spindles that are used in ring frames. This gives them a longer work life and low friction performance. Our spindle oil is also used because of its property of being a low staining oil.
