Step 2: wrap yarn clockwise around shaft, but not all the way back to Corner #1. Stop at Corner #4.

Step 3: bring yarn under the spindle and diagonally across to Corner #2. (see third photo for an underside view of this step)

Step 4: twist the base of the spindle so that what was Corner #2 takes the place of Corner #1 and Repeat.

Note: In the photo I'm holding the spindle between my knees so that I have a free hand for photoshooting. Normally I hold the base of the spindle in my right hand and the yarn in my left.

Dave has crafted the whorl of this elegant Tibetan supported spindle from chechen wood. Chechen is also known as Caribbean rosewood. The cherry shaft measures 11 1/2 inches long, and the weight of this beautiful handspinning tool is 50 grams.

This is the Turkish spindle created by Ashford (New Zealand). It allows you to get a center pull ball when you are finished.

This unique 1.1 ounce (30gram) moose antler rim weighted top whorl drop spindle has been intricately carved by Dave with his signature leaf motif. The notched whorl measures 1 5/8 inches in diameter, and the cocobolo shaft is 7 1/4 inches in length. The bottom of the shaft has been shaped to accommodate a half hitch and a brass hook has been added to the top.
