This Tibetan support spindle is approximately 12 1/2 inches long and weighs 50g (1.8 ounces). The Goncalo Alves whorl measures approximately 1.75 inches and has been attached to a Birch shaft. The tip has been crafted from hard Mesquite.
My birthday present from my sweet husband and baby... A Mother Marion style kick spindle. Shown with the first yarn I plied on the spindle, 0.9 oz of wool spun at a fingering weight for 66 yards.

This Mayan Spindle was made with a dowel and a piece of scrap wood drilled to fit the dowel which I glued on to the top. The spinning part is wood from a clementine orange box that I took apart.

I am often asked what these strange pink "berries" are. They are the fruits of spindle which can be seen at a few locations in Hatfield Forest. The long straight stems were once used as spindles in the spinning trade.
