This one is of plywood and weighs about 32 gramms.
It has a 8mm shaft.
Mind that all my spindles have their centre right in the middle of the hook - think at what would happen if the hook itself was placed in the exact middle....yes: the yarn would be ex-centered! Therfor a bent shape in the spindle hook is the best way to make certain the spindle does not wobble...

I recently made these African bead spindles. Three with bamboo skewers as shafts and one with a vintage steel no. 3 double pointed knitting needle.
All my spindles are some way or another decorated with flower motifs.
Some have flowers on the back, other have surfaces on the front that allow a decoration in flower motifs as well.
All spindles that I make are unique by the design, the choice of the wood and the decorations.
The bright pink seed capsule of the Spindle Tree splits to expose orange seeds. Seen near Snowshill in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds.
A little test run with the coin spindle. Some white cotton fiber. Not sure what kind exactly. Will have ask about that.

Photo quality is not the best. I used a point-and-shoot digital camera. Will have to wait for my 35 mm roll of film to be processed for a better shot!

Tamworth is a village located on the Salmon River between Napanee and Kaladar. This garden is open to the public and was featured in a recent issue of Harrowsmith. The photos speak for themselves, although going through on a 35 deg. day (celsius) didn't do justice to our visit.
Spindle shrub at entrance to The Yurt Cafe Limehouse, not seen it in this colour before, and liked the colour brick behind. Coffee & cake at the cafe wasn't too bad either.
A shrub native to Britain. The unusual shaped berries are attractive to birds and split open to reveal a seed like an orange segment. The wood was used to make spindles (hence the common name?), skewers, knitting needles or toothpicks and produces a good quality charcoal, used by artists. Whisby Nature Park, Lincolnshire, UK.
Best. Anniversary present. Ever.
Custom made Golding 1.4 oz cherry and walnut spindle. He even got PERMISSION from the RECORD COMPANY to use the Rush StarMan logo.
0.8 oz. lace spindle made of oak, with a notched shaft, (rather than a metal hook), purchased from The Drafting Zone (Bowie, MD) at the 2008 Fall Fiber Festival. The woodworker's name escapes me, but I was told he designed these for his wife who does re-enactments at Mount Vernon.
the right spindle is my first ashford spindle that i have been using. the middle top whorl is my new spindle. the nostepinne on the left was bought from a wonderful old couple who makes their own spindles and other fun spinning type stuff. i hope to go back to their table next year and buy a spindle. my friend susan bought a spindle from them made out of a pear tree (in northern alberta!) and it came with a great story. i love buying from craftspeople. both the new spindle and the nosti are hadmade...but not by me. www.flickr.com/groups/handmadebutnotbyme/
I just bought another Turkish spindle. This is the photo from the seller. I'll replace it with one of my own as soon as it arrives.

The pedal body came off the spindle shown here. I'm not sure if the end of the threaded portion of the spindle just broke off or what.
