It took hours of prep work from dozens of volunteers, unloading and assembling bikes.

But when 200+ kids streamed through the doors at the Webster University gymnasium Saturday morning and saw their new bikes waiting for them, it made all the effort worthwhile!

Bikes for Kids is always a magical extravaganza of excitement for all the kids that get to take home new bikes. This is what the magic looked like.

Thank you to all our volunteer crews, partner agencies, sponsors, St. Louis Rams cheerleaders, Rampage and our terrific hosts at Webster!

Camp Imua camper Jackson-Leigh Cheney-Look, 6, on Sunday makes friends with one of the horses that was brought to Camp Maluhia for the weeklong special-needs camp for school age children. Camp Imua is a program of Imua Family Services. This year, the camp hosted 52 campers, with 105 volunteers. Volunteers are 15 years and older. The days at Camp Imua are filled with horses to ride and pet, a swimming pool, arts and crafts, movies, excursions to the Maui Ocean Center, beaches and the Piiholo Ranch Zipline, plus a dance, bonfire and other activities. Camper Matthew D'Alessandro (bottom, from left), 8, swims with a dog during an excursion to Olowalu on Monday and Cole Magno, 7, plays on a boogieboard with the help of volunteer Zachary Pezzillo, 16.

Volunteer in Vietnam: Children with Special Needs program: This village is based about 6-7 miles outside of Hanoi. The village provides medical care, physical therapy, education and vocational training for 100-120 children with a variety of mental and physical conditions. There are nine family-style residences providing housing for girls and boys and their housemothers as well as special housing for severely disabled children. Other buildings house administrative offices, a medical clinic, a kitchen and dining hall, vocational studios, and educational facilities including a computer classroom. There are organic fruit and vegetable gardens, a medicinal herb garden, fishponds and farm animals.

Activities: Volunteers will have opportunities to teach English and will be mainly be engaged in helping the children with other activities that the children have the ability to carry out, such as craft, art, embroidery, computer skills, and assisting the children their movements and rehabilitation. There is also a very large organic farm at the village that provides up to 60% of the center’s produce. Volunteers will be given the opportunity to work in the garden and to assist in other physical activities if the volunteer has the capacity to do so. Local guesthouse accommodation, or on-site dorm room options.

Clinical placements are based in public hospitals, small clinics, and a regional hospital in Cusco. Volunteers seeking a hands on "clinical" experience are required to be healthcare professionals or currently enrolled medical/nursing/dental students - and provide us their credentials or current enrollment status information. As a medical/nurse/dental volunteer you should expect to shadow, as well as have some hands on work. Expect to be part of a team. These program are as much about learning about universal health care, as it is to offer hands on assistance to the local medical staff who you will be working with.

Helen is starting to adapt to our house. We are now able to give her some supervised time exploring our house and she seems to really enjoy it. It is very interesting to watch her explore despite her lack of eyesight. She sniffs at everything and moves very slowly and tentatively. When she finds things that typical kittens play with, she plays with them just like a typical kitty. If she finds a string, she rolls onto her back and bats at it. If she finds a ball, she pushes it around and chases it.

It'll be very interesting to watch her grow and learn.

Day 251 ~ Hard Day

Dominic came home from school on Friday with a fever and he was getting nursed back to health by Nana this weekend, so Curtis and I took Anna to the City Wide Garage Sale. This sort of thing is usually something she loves, but this day she had a hard time. She’s been more obsessed than usual and we aren’t sure if it’s the meds or school or what, but it’s hard to see her this unhappy. I was trying to get her to smile for me, but she turned away at the last moment and drifted away from me.

Allison's Dance Class visited an assisted living home. They all did a wonderful job! It's hard to remember sometimes that all these kids have some sort of learning disability because they do so well!
