Big Picture, Tim Lowly © 1997, 120" x 120", tempera on panel. Private collection, Seoul, Korea.

This painting was part of an exhibition at Art Space Seoul in Korea. It was the first of several large paintings I have made where I intentionally engaged the convention of “the big picture” as the territory of politically or religiously charged spectacle. In size Big Picture, references the painting Las Meninas by Velázquez: a painting that in itself subverts convention. In Las Meninas, Velázquez’s most important painting as the court painter, he chose to include and emphasize the representation people who were in service in the court (including himself) while relegating the king and queen to a reflection in the mirror. Implicitly, but not insignificantly the viewers of the painting are standing where the reflected royalty should (according to the mirror) be standing. In a parallel manner the painting Big Picture,’s use of a rather compelling perspective (particularly for anyone who is in the room with the actual painting) situates the viewer of the painting in the painting. Let me rephrase this latter point: the way this work is functioning is such as to place the viewer into the world of the painting. As such to the extent that the painting is spectacle it is not one that allows or encourages a passive, removed observation.

I volunteer with the aviation charity Vital Flight, which flies patients with Special Needs to distant medical appointments at zero cost to them. Pilots donate their time and aircraft to achieve this. Once a year the organizers of this wonderful charity provide free pleasure ride flights to hundreds of kids with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down’s syndrome, and other debilitating conditions.

I’ve had the pleasure of documenting these events for several years now. Here’s just a few of the smiling faces that I captured from this year’s event held in May 2022.

Nikon D700, 50 mm, 1/100 sec. F/8, ISO 100, 1 SB900 with a shoot through umbrella overhead and to the right. I used the headboard to my bed as the background. I had to remove the mattress in order to have a large enough background for this as the top is just out of frame.

Here is the finest driving skills I've ever seen for a youngster. Ian knows how to motor that Quickie Mini! Plus he thinks he is Flash Gordon!

This couple had known each other for twenty years and had been 'trying' to get married for many years. Eventually their voice was heard and they were married a couple of years ago. They now live, semi-independently, in their own flat. Both work part-time and they are clearly very much in love. Fantastic....can you imagine this happening a decade ago?

This image is from a calendar I have been producing to raise awareness of Down's syndrome.

A spring outing for the Special Education class at Jemtegaard Middle School.

Just around the corner from a Convent, A large Church, and old CN rail station, and more old buildings, sits this gorgeous school. I would have loved to have photographed the original school.

The history of Our Lady of Lourdes school building is both unique & interesting.

Our building was originally built in 1909 was then know as St. Mary's School.

At the time of opening its doors, St. Mary's School accommodated a mix of boys and girls grade 1-12. In 1918, the boys were moved to another building in the neighborhood and this school was renamed "St. Mary's Girls School". The building was enlarged in 1958 with additional wings and continued to be a school for girls until 1979. The building was then vacated and partially used for offices of the Diocese of Calgary.

In the summer of 2002 the building was demolished, with intentions of rebuilding a new school that would resemble the original. It is told that some of the brick & sandstone from the original building were used to build our new school.

Currently Our Lady of Lourdes is a school for Grade 1-9 students with behavioural issues & complex needs. We are blessed to work in a beautiful building with such interesting history.

Amber's PT Laura describes her transformation as incredible. Two years ago she was confined to a wheelchair. An aggressive EasyStand program along with exercise and she is now on crutches. Congratulations Amber! That is amazing!

I saw this Range Rover parked in the handicapped parking outside the NSC the other day. It wasn't displaying a permit for parking in a disabled parking spot.
