“You need a flange sprocket for that one.” A conspiratorial look in my direction. A steely nod in return that almost certainly failed to mask the bewilderment. “Then you’ll want an electric socket hammer to push the shankhead nails through. Then lay the new sheets, starting at the bottom and working up. Thirty centimetre overlaps between every panel. The galvanised rubber bungs will keep the rain out for years. Bish bosh, easy job. You could do the lot in three days.”
Ali was grinning at me, knowing that I had not the faintest clue what was being said. Our visiting expert might as well have been speaking in Serbo Croat for all I understood. She wanted to tell him to look at my soft pasty hands, hewn from a lifetime of wearing white shirts at the office, while before us stood a benevolent bearded gorilla of a man, a mixture of dried paint and wood stain all over his jeans and jumper, the result of doing a proper day’s work for a living. We were standing in our leaky garage, inspecting the roof and discussing the best way to keep it watertight this winter. Did we need a new roof, or could we repair this one? All of this was so far removed from anything familiar. What workplace skills I had were entirely limited to counting things and presenting the results to people further up the food chain than me. Whenever the urge seizes me to try a bit of DIY, I lie down in a darkened room and wait for the feeling to pass over. I call it DIwon’t.
We’ve had a sudden run of visitors to the house this summer. All male, all offering their considered wisdom on things that are falling down or need replacing, and all of them speaking in languages that I really don’t understand. The only thing these soft office boy ears hear is white noise when anyone starts talking about sprockets and sockets. There’s the old wooden windows, the collapsing rear porch, the rusting ride on mower with the gammy drive belt, the sycamores that need removing without falling onto the neighbours beehives, the bulging septic tank and the unending saga of the garage roof with the inbuilt shower. Only our plumber is female - and she did such a good job last time that we don’t need her services at the moment. I did fix a leaky tap in the bathroom last year - in fact I did a lap of honour around the garden when it no longer dripped at the fourth attempt to solve the problem. But mostly, I’m worse than useless. The sad and uncomfortable truth is that I need men in overalls to make my life function at moments like these, and I know that sounds wrong on just about every level.
Even a relatively simple task can lead me into a world of pain. Recently, one of our five a side football circle announced he was opening a new coffee stop opposite Redruth railway station, and had invited local artists to bring in their masterpieces. He’d put them on the wall to brighten the place up and sell them on the creative’s behalf. Stupidly, I told him that I do a bit of landscape photography around Cornwall and shared my Instagram feed, and before I knew it I’d agreed to bring some framed prints in. I rapidly chose four local scenes and had them printed, and then I ordered some white frames. Nice looking frames, hopefully robust enough and not very expensive. If I’m going to get a couple of quid out of this I need to remember this is Redruth and not trendy St Ives or Padstein. The people around here don’t take their baths in foaming gallons of champagne, you know. Some of them can barely afford water.
That left the business of assembling my purchases, and now my incomparable incompetence at all matters practical came to the fore. A can of mounting spray arrived from Mr Bezos, who it turned out owed me a tenner because one of the frames had a tiny mark on it. Ali and I watched some YouTube videos and were left bewildered by the multitude of different approaches. How could something that looked so simple be so complicated? In the end we came up with our own method - one which you definitely won’t ever see in the textbook. The mounting spray is supposed to stay “tacky” for five minutes, but it really doesn’t waste any time bonding two surfaces together. The moment we attempted to stick the printed photo to the backing paper along the carefully scored lines that had been made in advance, it broke loose and landed at a far more avant-garde angle, refusing to budge any further. Then there’s the business of trying to keep the inside free of dust, stray moulting hairs and goodness knows whatever else. With a shameful hidden mass of clipped edges hiding beneath the mount, the finished result does at least look like it’s supposed to. I wonder if we’ll have learned anything by the time we’ve completed the first batch. Maybe we need a flange sprocket, whatever that is.
I’m far more comfortable at the scenes of those images. Here’s one from that prototype selection - the only one that wasn’t already on Flickr. No sprockets or sockets required around here. Just a soft handed office boy with a camera and a flask of tea.
The R2 socket is probably the most annoying part of the ship, as I’m sure your aware, the droids head and arms are supposed to be telescopic all of a sudden just so that it can fit into the ship! Since I wanted to include the whole astromech i.e not just the head, I ended up using the car mud guard pieces to recreate the cylindrical part of the ship. I’m quite pleased with this area as it keeps the ship as thin as possible while still being able to house the droid. However, I fear using car pieces in Star Wars ships is becoming something of a habit! :D
I found the Mixel sets in stores today, excited to finally mess with those new mini ball-and-socket parts. This is really more table scrap than anything.
I love the way this macro turned out with the shadows on one side and a viewing of the tops of others as you glance back. I have no idea what metric sockets are but thanks to my husband I got this shot :)

We can't do without it any more. Electricity is essential to our economy, society and to our personal lives. We need it at home and at work. More and more applications depend on electricity. Think of central heating, cars and now also trucks and large industrial production processes, such as at Tata Steel, Yarra and Dow Chemical.
TenneT has the task of installing an electricity grid at sea. This way, offshore wind farms can be connected to the onshore electricity grid. Onshore houses the greatest demand for electricity. If each wind farm had to design and construct its own export connection, it would be very expensive. The export cable determines roughly 40% of the business case of a wind farm. That is why the Dutch have a system that standardizes and coordinates this. Until 2030, TenneT will build eight identical platforms and position them offshore. These are the “sockets” for the offshore wind farms.
Hollandse Kust south
TenneT is currently installing 2 sockets for the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) wind energy zone. HKZ Alpha and Beta. Together they will provide the offshore connection for Vattenfall's 1.5 GW wind farm from the end of 2022.
Collision with Beta
On Monday, January 31 2022, storm Corrie caused an empty bulk carrier of 200+ meters to drift. After a collision with another vessel it drifted through the construction zone of HKZ. It just missed Alpha and later collided with the chassis or support jacket of the platform Beta. This has caused damage, but not to the extent that the jacket had to be replaced or had to be repaired onshore.
Topside
On December 27, 2021, the superstructure, also called topside, was placed on the jacket. TenneT is now carrying out the final installation work. In order to do this quickly and efficiently, the employees do not sail back to land every day. A working/hotel platform has been placed next to Beta. In this case, the Seafox 7. This is a four-legged, self-lifting large ship without propulsion. The ship offers space for accommodation, construction work and maintenance. It’s specifically designed to withstand harsh offshore environments and conditions, it can operate all year round in water depths up to 40m. The Seafox 7 offers permanent accommodation to 113 persons on board (POB).
Getting bigger
The topside of Beta is roughly 30 meters high, 60 meters long and 35 meters wide. In short: it is not a small object. In the future, the sockets will become larger. Because the wind farms further out to sea will become a bit larger and, due to the longer distance to land, require a different connection technology. Those platforms then become 5 football fields in size. In any case, so large that, despite a lens of 16 mm, you can no longer easily get this in one photo from so close.
Technical Stuff
This is a single non-HDR photo. The EV range of the Canon R6 is such that one in many cases doesn’t multiple shots. And that's a very nice feature when you're on board a moving ship. This shot was taken at: 250ISO, f8.0, -2/3EV, 1/250 and at 29 mils.
Post-production was done with Lightroom. Mainly balancing the (back) lighting conditions. Finally, I added the copyright signs (in Photoshop). The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.
The #MacroMondays theme is socket. Am not sure this is even still functional. I *think* it’s an adapter to make a regular socket be touch sensitive.
“A Little Tale”…
With a gleam in his eye socket, empty now that he is a skeleton, and with a toothy grin (Yes, he still has all his teeth.), the skeleton, after years of clawing at his prison, the coffin in which he was buried so long ago and which rose to the surface after the great flood of 2005, kicked his right foot through the top of the coffin lid.
You must realize how hard a feat this was to do since, as a skeleton, he has no muscles, ligaments or tendons.
Ahh, that hole, made by his foot, let in fresh air and, even though it didn’t totally eliminate the rotting stench of his own body, it was enough to grace the skeleton with at least some clean pure cool air.
Despite having no lungs, he raised his chest up as if he still had them, so that mentally, the fresh air could flow through his empty rib cage. He imagined how the air would feel filling his lungs and cleaning them out after all this time.
The fact that he was able to get one body part out of the rotting wood, creating the small hole in his coffin and giving him a taste of what awaited him outside his prison, fresh air, spurred him on to free himself even more and, eventually, be out of his coffin completely. So, he began to claw furiously at the wood and over time, he made a hole just large enough for his face and neck.
What joy! After all that time in his airless dark stinky box, his face, now all bone, was free and with his eye sockets he imagined the sun…bright and warm on skin, eaten off long ago.. He remembered the blue of the sky and the white of the clouds. He was certain he felt a gentle breeze caress his cheeks.
Life. Once again, after decades, he felt a part of it and amongst all the living things that lived and walked on the earth. It made him feel alive again and he heard himself laugh deeply and loudly. Of course, no sound escaped his mouth or throat for he no longer had either. He didn’t care.
He was on his way to complete freedom and becoming a part of the living. He had his imagination and his memory and that would do him just fine when he was free.
Then, without warning, it was black again. Boards had been put across the opening he had worked so hard to make for his face. “No”, he screamed, but no one heard him for he made no sound.
Once again he was trapped inside his dark rotting coffin. Life had been so close. Now, it was gone. He was dead, a skeleton, again.
After feeling defeated and broken, the skeleton, after awhile realized that his foot was still partially out of the coffin and there was still a hole for fresh air to enter. So, He did still have hope. He made an opening before and he could do it again… in another place in the coffin lid where the boards were not placed. It would take hard work and time, but time was something that was of no consequence to him.
He had hope and hope is, well, life.

The figures were sold in these assortments, not as singles. This was to emphasize the interchanging play value.
The package trays were also vacuformed to the specific figures so the assortments were not random. Once you had all the assortments, you had the complete set and the ability to make "Over 15 Quadrillion Combinations!"

It still works and was old when I first started using this 150 feet long extension lead 40 years ago....Decided to check the wiring of this plug and socket and found this....Time to invest in the future I think.
