Snow in December is not unexpected here in Colorado, but a temperature drop from 42 degrees Fahrenheit to 5 degrees in 2 hours is record-breaking! Then the temperatures dropped even further through the night. I used "storybook" effects to my snowy images to add to the feeling of wonder!
Just hours after our first "major" snowstorm, a Canadian Pacific eastbound with CSX C40-8 No. 7493, and a KCS Southern Belle, blast through Pilgrim Road and North Avenue in Brookfield, WI. For a less obscured view of the train see Lime Nuggets shot here: www.flickr.com/photos/drewhalv/23422273454/

Despite their thick fur, it must have been really cold even for these sheep. They were in the wind of blizzard Darcy and had nowhere to shelter, which is why they were shivering against each other.
I myself had the good idea to make a nine-kilometer walk with this snowdrift. That was a bit of a struggle, but in the end I ended up with some special photos.

I got this shot this morning as the sun was rising.
I used a polarizer and under exposed the shot by quite a bit.
initially I had a lot of color to work with, but my detail was lacking. Especially along the top of the snow bank.
I played around in LR and was able to get quite a bit more detail to come out.
It has a slight crop along the bottom and sides although for a print I would probably use the whole image. Just thought for the web it looked better with the crop.
Also I enhanced the color. Particularly the luminosity of orange and red. For some reason those two adjustments really seemed to bring out the details even in the shadows along the top of the bank.
Also the polarizer really seemed to help make the sky a vivid blue.
The tiny white specs are tiny sparkles from the sunshine on the snow. In full size they are a little more obvious.
Here is the first of a few that I will post of the drifted snow. (See yesterdays post for an overview shot). I have to say that I am having a tough time in deciding which to post, as I took a number of shots over two days and am quite happy with many of them. While they are all of the same basic subject, they are all so different.

SLT Scania / Optare D10 SLT well stuck in a large snowdrift on Lostock Lane, Wingates today - it won't be going to the Trafford Centre or anywhere else in a hurry!
Apollo was trying to dodge the snowdrifts and ended up climbing in the tree even. I thought he looked like a proper rocker in this outfit and Miro's new 66cm body suits him pretty darn well! I'm so thrilled with him now!! I bonded on a completely new level with this boy too now after our wintery excursion in the garden. :)
The Ebb and Flow of snow drifts and clouds at the Pepperpot lighthouse prompted me to return to one of my old favourite websites, 'The Abstract Art Title Generator', if you're ever stuck for a poncey title for your photo its a great resource :)
