An officer of the 13th Canadians (Royal Highlanders of Canada) described the wood in mid-1916:
Sanctuary Wood was by this time a wood in name only. Such trees as stood were riven and leafless, while their fallen branches added to the maze of wire and trenches beneath. The air was heavy with the sickening odour of decay, so that the whole battered district, even by day, was a place of grisly horror and evil omen.
With my spinal chord re-arranged by my chiropractor in Saltash and a few sunny bridge fots to boot it was off to the top end of Plympton for my haircut appointment. With my remaining hairs snipped it was just a couple of minutes up the road to Hemerdon and perfect timing for the 08.50 Penzance - Cardiff Central ascending the 1 in 42 gradient in the morning sunshine headed by 43192 with 43092 on the rear. The city of Plymouth can be seen in the distance.

Used tin snips to cut through the aluminum. Tip: when using metal snips, never make cuts all the way to the tip of the scissors. It will end up bending the metal at the tip. Make sure you stop cutting just before closing the tips.
I'm engaging in a bit of competitive birding with the other eBird users in Los Alamos. We compete to see who can find the most species within the county. So when I hear that one of the other eBirders who lives near me has a Greater Roadrunner visiting her back yard every day, I'm not above sniping it with a long lens from across the canyon--even when the lighting is completely wrong.
++species. I'm up to 39 species of bird found in the county so far this year (in the last 3 days), which I'm pretty happy with.
Playing around with Picmonkey.
