Students from the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy worked hard to remove invasive species and restore the area surrounding a bird viewing blind at Trinity River Audubon Center. They removed roughly 300 to 500 square feet of brush around the bird blind to increase visibility, and at the same time create bird-friendly habitats. Two large brush piles were created near the bird blind. This will provide feeding grounds and shelter for many wintering birds. After almost three hours of hard work, they took a victory hike to the river and discussed the significance of their efforts.

Afrikaanse Snip

(Gallinago nigripennis)

The African snipe (Gallinago nigripennis) also known as the Ethiopian snipe, is a small stocky wader. It breeds in eastern and southern Africa in wet mountain moorland and swamps at altitudes of 1,700–4,000 m (5,600–13,100 ft). When not breeding it disperses widely, including into coastal lowlands.

This 30–32 cm (12–13 in) long snipe has a stocky body and relatively short legs for a wader. Its upperparts, head and neck are streaked and patterned with bold dark brown stripes and gold edges to the feathers forming lines down its back. The belly is white, with some brown barring on the flanks but never on the belly. The pinkish-brown bill is very long, straight and fairly robust. The legs and feet are yellowish-olive to greenish-grey. The sexes are similar, and immatures differ only in showing pale fringes on the wing coverts.

The African snipe makes a hleep call as it takes off, and has a far carrying kip call when breeding. It shows white trailing edges on the wings and white tail corners in flight.

The African snipe can only be confused with the three migrant snipes that occur in its range, common, pin-tailed and great snipe. Great snipe is obviously larger, darker, and relatively shorter billed. Pintail snipe lacks the white trailing edges on the wings and its tail corners have very little white.

The common snipe is very similar to African although African is darker above and longer-billed; identification on the ground is very difficult. In flight, African has a slower, more fluttering flight on its more rounded wings, and zig-zags less when flushed. The more extensive white in the tail is often obvious.

There are three subspecies of the African snipe:

G. n. aequatorialis, (Rüppell, 1845), Ethiopia to eastern D. R. Congo, eastern Zimbabwe and northern Mozambique.

G. n. angolensis, (Barbosa du Bocage, 1868), Angola and northern Namibia to Zambia and western Zimbabwe.

G. n. nigripennis, (Bonaparte, 1839), southern Mozambique and South Africa.

The African snipe builds a saucer-shaped nest of dry grass in the drier areas of its breeding marshes. The nest is concealed in a dense tuft of grass or rushes. Breeding is dependent on the rains in the tropics, but mainly April to October in South Africa, although nesting has occurred in all months.

This bird has a spectacular aerial display, which involves flying high in circles, followed by a powerful stoop during which the bird makes a drumming sound, caused by vibrations of modified outer tail feathers.

The African snipe is quite common in suitable marshy areas of wetlands and dams. It forages by pushing its long bill deep into the mud seeking insects and worms. If alarmed, it freezes, and its cryptic plumage provides effective camouflage when the bird stands motionless amongst marsh vegetation. When flushed, it flies off fast with a zigzagging action.

My idea was if they didn't like the rest of the quilt, they could snip this off and frame it.

One of the greatly anticipated pleasures was to grab the secateurs and cut the year's first bunch of grapes on the vine. I believe its the gamza variety. Unusual but attractive twist in the flavour. Ok... not exactly seedless with as many of 3 large seeds in a smallish grape and nevertheless delicious on early morning meusli with local walnuts or in the afternoon under the dudy tree with the village soft cheese (later in week).

Ok my 2nd as evolved by the last day, and it remains a dream, is maybe to prepare a meal with vine leaves. In Bulgaria this dish (I think) is called sarmi and I'm open to correction, The vine stuffing can include a diversity of ingredients - rice, minced meat, pine nuts, walnuts, raisins, mint and lemon juice. Across the planet they reckon cabbage leaves can be used as a substitute. I say just be prepared. Gather the vine leaves and enjoy a side of cabbage steamed and then add butter.

27.08.2015: Up long before the sun arrives in the valley. Dew point is surprisingly high given the damp ground early morning. Walnuts: Looking great but they need a great deal of coaxing to leave the tree. Given the piercing test, they are too advanced for pickling (1). Have a look at the wall around the water tank. 2 days of heavy rain has taken its toll and it is clear that we have a soil erosion issue... all soil is being washed out. Need to act quickly and before winter.

(1).On my return to the uK, I make a beeline to the local walnut tree on the 55th North parallel to find the less mature walnuts, higher latitude nuts have been harvested early.

It's that time again to donate my hair to Locks of Love. 12+ inches is ready to go! I feel really good without all that heavy hair on me but my daughter is not happy about it. She likes me with long hair. As I always say, it'll grow back. My grandson's only comment was that the color is different (more grey) but he seemed as unconcerned as I am about the actual cut. :)

Dangit...I was aiming for the head!

12 inches gone.

Slower than a 'lectric razor. More precise than a machete. Able to trim stray hairs in several quick snips. Over there: look! It's clipperman! It's scissorman! No, it's Snip 'er Man!

A while back (May 4th, to be exact) I got my hair cut. I got sick of all the split ends and damage, so I chopped off a good 3 inches or so. It's now a short bob kinda cut, with the front being just a bit longer than the back.

Gonna give it another dark brown treatment in a few days to get back the darker chocolate brown I had previously. :>

Another funny story... I forgot I had her cut it when I woke up this AM after a fab night at the Magic Bag. WHOOPS! Hahaha...

I literally did the Joey (blossom) "Woah!" when I looked in the mirror. We know I had way too much fun last night!

OH, and I love the haircut too!! Hahaha

MR2 Roadster Owners' Club visits North Weald Airfield

The diners receive a written instruction, delivered to our beds by the staff: A girl wearing a kimono will appear soon and sit in front of the diners. Each table should stand up, take the supplied scissors, and cut a piece of silk from the kimono. We should then return to our beds and contemplate the meaning of the experience.

Without ceremony, the first cut is made.
