This shot is a little over-exposed, but I posted it because I wanted to show the scent glands on the side of the shell. This is a baby snapper (as you can tell by the next shot). The scent glands are used as a defence mechanism....man did this little guy stink!

The unofficial Ryerss mascot, Snapper is a stuffed baby alligator that served as a calling card tray holder. Placed by the main door, a calling card tray allowed the Victorian visitor to announce himself.

This common snapping turtle was just emerging from tall grass some distance from any water. It may have been a female looking for a place to lay eggs.
