the snapper.
One of my favourtie New Zealand fish species to have in the pan. Like here in the Goat Island marine reserve, there were a few of them following me around, like hungry cats ..
After some big landslides along the coast, the visbility was rather average as you can see.

Had to take some photos of the staff where I work, they wanted it done at Snapper Rock in Coolangatta. So why not make a morning out of it - got up at 4am ready for dawn.

"Snapper Rocks is a small rocky outcrop on the northern side of Point Danger at the southern end of Queensland's Gold Coast. It is a famous surf break and today the start of the large sand bank known to surfers as the Superbank.
It was better known as a fishing spot (hence the name) than it was as a surf break before 1995 when the Tweed River Entrance Sand Bypassing Project (TRESBP) began pumping sand out of the river mouth and dumping it just east of Snapper Rocks. Before long a super sand bank had formed in Rainbow Bay and once the swells started hitting, local surfers realised they had one of the world's longest, and most consistent point breaks on their doorstep" (see www.snapperrocks.com/)

The proposed rule would modify Chapter 68B-14.0038, FAC, (Recreational Snapper Seasons) to set the recreational fishing season for Gulf of Mexico red snapper to begin the Saturday before Memorial Day through July 14. Opening red snapper for recreational harvest in the Gulf of Mexico the Saturday before Memorial Day rather than June 1 would allow additional harvest opportunities for anglers fishing in state waters over Memorial Day weekend. A July 14 ending date in 2014 would allow for two weekends of fishing in July, which is an important tourist season in the Gulf. The 2013 recreational red snapper season in Gulf state waters also ended on July 14. If this proposed season is approved by the Commission, the 2014 Gulf recreational red snapper season would open Saturday, May 24 for a total of 52 days.
If the recreational season opens the Saturday before Memorial Day in future years, the start date and number of harvest days would fluctuate from year to year since Memorial Day is observed on the fourth Monday of May instead of the same day each year. For example, the Saturday before Memorial Day in 2015 will be May 23 (resulting in a 53-day season) and in 2016 will be May 28 (resulting in a 48-day season).
Or as it is commonly called - The Beloit Snappers minor league baseball team mascot. Seen here getting a much-needed 'adjustment' to its suit.
This shot was a nice challenge for cropping, color, tone and brightness manipulation.
They measured and weighed the turtle then released it back into the pond.
This common snapper was a male and weighed 46lbs the shell was 17" in length, and 19" across and is probably 40-50 years old according to Nate.
Nate told us that he had recently captured a 50lb common snapper in Blendon Woods but this was just as big and he was quite happy with this catch, we all told him that this is not one of the bigger ones that live in the pond and I showed him a photo that I had of one that was a lot bigger than this one. He told us that the world record for a Common Snapping turtle was 100lbs. I'm sure that the one we have seen I would say would weigh in around 80lbs or so, but who knows, all I know is that he is one big snapper and a lot bigger than this one!!!
This turtle was deffinatley not happy he was hissing and snapping at everything, I couldn't believe the size of it's claws, When it opened it's mouth wide it was wide enough that Nate could of stuck his fist inside. I couldn't imagine having something like this clamping down on a finger, wrist, arm or anything it was deffinately capable of doing some serious harm!!
Ecology and life history
Common habitats are shallow ponds, shallow lakes, or streams. Some may inhabit brackish environments, such as estuaries. Common Snapping Turtles sometimes bask—though rarely observed—by floating on the surface with only their carapace exposed, though in the northern parts of their range they will also readily bask on fallen logs in early spring. In shallow waters, Common snappers may lie beneath a muddy bottom with only the head exposed, stretching their long necks to the surface for an occasional breath (note that their nostrils are positioned on the very tip of the snout, effectively functioning as snorkels). Snapping turtles are omnivores, consuming both plant and animal matter, and are important aquatic scavengers; but they are also active hunters that prey on anything they can swallow, including many invertebrates, fish, frogs, reptiles (including snakes and smaller turtles), unwary birds and small mammals.
Snappers will travel extensively overland to reach new habitat or to lay eggs. Pollution, habitat destruction, food scarcity, overcrowding and other factors will drive snappers to move overland; it is quite common to find them traveling far from the nearest water source. This species mates from April through November, with their peak laying season in June and July. The female can hold sperm for several seasons, using it as necessary. Females travel over land to find sandy soil in which to lay their eggs, often some distance from the water. After digging a hole, the female typically deposits 25 to 80 eggs each year, guiding them into the nest with her hind feet and covering them with sand for incubation and protection. Incubation time is temperature-dependent, ranging from 9 to 18 weeks. In cooler climates, hatchlings overwinter in the nest.
Behavior
Common Snapping Turtles have vicious dispositions and readily snap at nearby objects[5], however, when encountered in the water, they usually slip quietly away from any disturbance.[6]

Snapper Rocks is located in the Munmorah National Park and is one of the most dangerous places on the East Coast of Australia. Over the years there have been many deaths and rescues. Mainly Rock Fisherman who have been washed off the rocks.
In this shot of the five rock fisherman only two are wearing life jackets despite it now being a legal requirement
