Paint test for the Newborn head sculpt - Alien: Resurrection.

As said, this is a paint test...not much detailing added, it helps me figure what paints necessary, as well as custom mixes that may be needed. Also helps to familiarize myself with the terrain so to speak...so I don't screw up on a final casting. Simply put - it's a practice piece.

There's many interpretations of the creatures skin color - some have it fleshy, pale appearance (like seen in the film), others have a greenish/gray hue. I will stick with the production/prop tones (which is a mix of both) for this piece. Love the dark, soulless eyes...ohhhh eerie!

I have my paint selected, mixed and ready to begin the final application for the sample that will be on display in France during the Caro/Jeunet expo in October. Updates coming soon! #painting #newborn #alien #customactionfigure #monsters

The silicon rubber is applied in thin layers first, and then a thickener was added to give more support. Smooth-On 25.

Two coats 321 on the outside, 2 or 3 coats of 320 on the inside. Nice an solid, very little flex. Now to sand the really rough patches and apply some filler to smooth it out.

HL2 metro cop helmet. After the test cure proved successful, I applied the first coat to the helmet. No thickener added, just used a brush to make sure the silicone got into all the fine details. Material is Smooth-on Rebound 25. The extra silicone was used to fill cups which are used later for mother mold registration features.

Plastipaste support structure, so the silicon will keep its shape when the resin is setting.

Build update on Ron Cobb's Tropical Rainforest cantina concept creature for Star Wars: A New Hope - 1:18 scale.

Using the mold I created a week or so ago, I was able to cast several copies of the head sculpt - and after much frustration and a couple mold variations at trying to get the best quality cast possible, I accepted my limitations of not having a pressure chamber, thus embracing the inevitability that I will not pull a perfect cast from any mold I create, no matter how I vent it or how I orientate the master sculpt.

So I ended up casting several and chose three of the best and cleaned them up. All of the air pocket problems I had involved the details around the neck so it wasn't really that big a job to correct. Not exact matches to the original, but I'm happy with them and feel good to move forward on this figure!

Next up will be the floral leaves for the arms and legs. The ones I did for placement earlier were tests that have since been scrapped. I plan to sculpt out several of the same size and shape, thicker at one ned so a ball joint can be applied. They will be sculpted and cast flat. I will use a heat gun to soften the plastic casts and bend them to the shape they need to be.

That's the plan of course...changes are sure to pop up as progress is made.

More to come!
