smooth-billed ani (Crotophaga ani) - Yasuni National Park, Ecuador
A ubiquitous bird in much of South America. It is found nearly anywhere there are open grassy areas and thus flourishes in cultivated areas such as pastures. Not an animal you'd normally find in the middle of the Amazon rainforest but a good number of them had made themselves at home in the clearing where the field station was located.

Anis are bizarre, coal-black cuckoos with long floppy tails and unique, curiously tall, flattened bills. Smooth-billed occurs in a variety of open and semi-open habitats in tropical lowlands and foothills, typically staying low in shrubs and grasses. Gregarious and not particularly graceful; usually seen crashing around awkwardly in small groups. Flies with choppy wingbeats and long glides.
Back in Georgetown after a long, long day of traveling yesterday. I have so many images to go through still, but I was able to edit a few while I was still in the jungle. The purpose of my short trip was to participate in a training program with Conservation International-Guyana to teach monitoring and identifiacation methods for reptiles and amphibians to members of the Protected Areas Commission, students from the University of Guyana, and local members of Yupukari Village.
During a short night river survey, we found this juvenile Smooth-fronted caiman (Paleosuchus trigonatus) which I brought back to camp to show the rest of the group in the morning. When I released it afterwards, I hopped into the water to capture a few images. Just a few snaps before it was off on its way!
Just as the river smooths the stones, so, life passing by, has a way of smoothing our rough edges. :)

Had a lovely walk through Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary today, and saw some unique wildflowers. The Hemlock is said to be highly poisonous. The Scentless Camomile, while pretty, is a much-hated invasive weed. We don't have a lot of water plants in Calgary, and so it was nice to see the Common Bladderwort. Smooth Fleabane is not an uncommon wildflower, but still pretty to see.

This is my final shot from the trip to Skye earlier in the month with Steve.
This time a long exposure to smooth the sea and catch the subtle colour on the surface of the water.
It was one of those calm days with a great sunset show that lasted a long time.....
This was taken at 7:35 PM. The previous image was taken at 7:21 PM (of the cloud in the upper right here) and the image before that was taken at 7:08 PM. I just love those amazing days when there are photo ops in every direction....
Kahn, cactus, succulents, grasses ...
Daily Dog Challenge: Smooth
Kahn looks particularly smooth in the sun ... and in contrast to the cactus and hard surfaces😀
I took this photo quickly as Kahn came from under the verandah but I like it ... it's "different".
sculptural element on the terrace of the Casa Milà (la Pedrera) in Barcelona, built by Antoni Gaudi in the spirit of the modernisme in the early 20th century.
There was a magic fascination for me when i walked between the sculptures on the roof top of the Casa Milà...i just wanted to nestle against the warm stone and dream away...

We went out playing with our new ND filter today. It was an amazing day and we were up fairly early. The day was so amazing that there wasn't a cloud in the sky which left it a bit bland and it is as nice to see the clouds in motion as it is to see the water smoothed over by the slow exposure time. Also they would have given the sky a bit more texture. We have a tone of locations for later in the spring when the leaves get some green as the color is a bit bland at the moment. There will be more to come!
