Rice made up of leftover lunch tomato sauce with added beans (pre-cooked in slowcooker) and brown rice with added chilli sauce more mushrooms and peppers and beer (think drunken beans). Mango + onion + tomato + cumin and coriander. Thinly sliced preserved lemon added to both.

Kicked off the crock-pot season with a nice little bottom round, pearl onions, potatoes, celery, carrots, garlic, onions and...beer...for the sauce.

Made for friend's birthday. It was a whole chicken, though eight hours of slow cooking made all the meat fall off the bone immediately. Maybe should add less salt and add carrots next time. Overall, tasty and everyone enjoyed the dinner.

i asked for a 4lb brisket when i ordered it. it turns out this piece is 5lb. i really wish they sold things in kg here lol i had no idea it woud be so big!!

i cut him in half and saved half for another time, and another flavour.

2.5lb fits perfect in my baby slow cooker =)

Trying to actually use some of these recipe books piled up in the corner. More or less Robin Robertson's recipe (subbed some dry sherry for some of the stock). Page 36 'Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker'.

This started out as thick pork steaks but became so tender it turned out more like diced pork! An interesting flavour fusion of pork together with kumera (sweet potato), spanish onion, orange, cardamom, cumin, cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds, sweet sherry and stock.

I served it with rice, mainly because of the Szechuan chicken being served at the same meal which really required rice... it probably would be better with polenta or smashed spud. :-)

or, to be more precise, hungarian smoked beef braise. this is from our favorite slowcooker cookbook, and it was really really good. grub is our cow and the garlic and a can of tomatoes i canned this summer. but i figure there's only 18 more meals to go, so surely i can eke out something grubby in all of them, right?

This was a disaster

Steel-cut oatmeal, made in the slowcooker all day yesterday and saved in the fridge for later consumption, with a bit of vanilla soymilk and some slivered almonds. Mmmmm.

Adapted from the recipe in "Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker: 200 Recipes for Healthy and Hearty One-Pot Meals That Are Ready When You Are" by Robin Robertson. A fantastic book!

Pictures for a future blog post with greater details.

5 lbs of onions, sliced and prepped to make a batch of pseudo-caramelized onions. The crockpot STILL smells like onions, even after washing. :(

I'm not strictly a meat and potatoes kind of gal, but this is one of my favourite meals, especially because it cooks itself in the crockpot with very minimal effort on my part! It also has a very homey feel to it.

popped it in the slow cooker, with all its sauces and juices and spices then set it to low and leave it,

my husband has the night off tonight so i'll cook it through the day and we can dine on it tonight for dinner!

Eight hours later, the nicely cooked chicken.

When I was cleaning up after dinner, it took all the willpower I have to keep me from spooning up & eating the softened-garlic-and-chicken-fat leftovers.

it didn't really work

i have to wonder: are inefficient slow cookers a better option than cooking on (say) a gas stove on low for several hours?
