A sketch from a live class I gave tonight about scenery work, depth and other things.

One of the things I really love about sketches in general is the way they – by necessity of time, circumstance, and place – seem to become a sort of shorthand for much more complex ideas and details. I’ve always appreciated the brevity some artists have, the way they can coerce a single line into speaking volumes, into communicating so much. Very occasionally I’ll see a hint of that evident in one of my sketches, but more frequently than not they’re just amused scribblings of the moment.

Got what errands I had to completed, and on the way home found the last spot on the side of the street to park before the bend into downtown. Drawn from the car on the corner of Monroe Ave and Howell Street.

Trying to learn how to shade my Zentangles. If you have pointers or tips, please feel free to share them with me. (The shading looks a lot darker in my sketch pad than it does in this scan.)

Repeat the base of the same sketching (pencil: eraseable. Sharpie: permanent), to draw the background with a pencil first, and if you feel finished with the pencil sketching then add Sharpie outlines with care. You may like to add a little more detail to the main object.
