Here are some very random sketchbook doodles I have made recently while talking on the phone, or calling in on conference calls or perhaps waiting for my car to be worked on. Some are fun others kinda silly. I sketch in a Canson 5.5x8.5 sketchbook. How about you?

Lumen sans was related to Burmese in a 'behind-the-scenes' way. I didn't want to replicate Burmese shapes in the Latin, but wanted to think about the principles of Burmese letter-writing and apply those to Latin letterforms. By studying Burmese writing primers, I found that the circles of Burmese letters are drawn mostly anticlockwise, and tried to find out what impact it would have to reverse the construction of Latin letters by writing and drawing them from different start points.

This is a very early sketch. Later developments took the sans in a more rational direction as the brief required strong contrast between the serif and sans parts of the family.

Life drawing class lesson number two.

I'm hoping that it will show as time goes on that I'm improving.

I know what i'm gonna do next week. Gonna choose a harder pencil.

I started to draw this old guy and his BSA red racer bike. With his wraparound shades with their oily reflection he guarded his bike getting of at Paisley before I could finish the drawing.

More sketches here. I'm thinking low vol / texty backgrounds

High vol / saturated / AMH / Tula Pink / very ME fabrics.

Ideas from clockwise from the top:

tiny AMH feathers.

Free pieced arrows of all sorts (I have a whole pinterest board here for this sort of thing www.pinterest.com/emedoodle/arrow-quilts/),

floaty equilateral triangles. lots of low vol with a handful of AMH etc,

medallion starting with an intense quilt block, then some free pieced low vol borders, solids thrown in too - tiny squares at the top, and an AMH feather to the left. Again this is a really loose sketch lots might change.

Please weigh in on your faves (there's one in the next picture too).

I don't do thumbnail sketches for every painting I make, but I like to do thumbnail sketches in my spare time. Best time is during holidays, when other family members are busy doing their things. Each thumbnail is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"(11cm x 14cm).

The first thumbnail is for the painting Red Rosebud on the Jewelry Box.

Quinze jours en France, septième jour

I’ve been taking a break from the large piece to do some doodling. It always helps me recharge and it gives me a fresh outlook when I step back up to the painting. Plus, my sketches differ quite a bit from my usual painting style, so it’s refreshing to do something different. Some of these characters, I’d definitely like to redo and add some color to them. That’ll probably be a future sketchbook entry.
