A couple of sketches of a boxwood knight from my House of Staunton chess set. These both began as contour drawings, with details and shading filled in afterwards. I found that contour drawing a symmetrical item is pretty problematic - it's hard to make the sides actually symmetrical. It's much easier to accurately draw an asymmetrical object (or at least asymmetrical objects don't show problems as easily).

A fairly quick sketch of a barn that I photographed last fall. Tried to keep it relatively loose, and to have strong separation of values. On the bottom, a hay bale from another photo. I thought it might be tough to render, and it was :-\.

Portrait of a Pinzgauer
Kind of had my own personal sketch crawl on Friday. I headed down to Buena Vista on my motorcycle, ahead of MB. I spent the larger part of the day in "downtown" BV, such as it is, doing some sketching.
I believe this is some sort of European troop carrier or utility vehicle. Very 4x4. I saw two of these in one weekend in the Buena Vista/Salida area. I suppose people buy these things and drive them around to make the Hummer folks feel inferior. I had a look inside, and it was very "agricultural". Notice that I again ran out of room on the page. Duh.
I’ve been taking a break from the large piece to do some doodling. It always helps me recharge and it gives me a fresh outlook when I step back up to the painting. Plus, my sketches differ quite a bit from my usual painting style, so it’s refreshing to do something different. Some of these characters, I’d definitely like to redo and add some color to them. That’ll probably be a future sketchbook entry.
Collection of sketches used as pre production of my fashion serieses, they all took an average of 15 mins. They were lots of help to conceptualize the poses and ideas behind thie photos, inspired or sometimes copied from fashion magazines, comics, and friends.
Test driving my new brush pen. Kuretake no. 13 - similar to pentel brush pen in springiness and flexibility (lovely!) but slightly shorter brush.
this is how i feel about work. Maybe one day i'll find the "perfect" job that won't make me feel so drained. Oh to dream...
I didn't know Renato Guedes was going to be at NYCC, but when I found out he was, and when I found out he had room on his list, what other character was I gonna get? I don't really go looking for female sketches most of the time cause I don't want hypersexualized sketches (though to be fair most of the artists I like don't do that), but this was the dude who made Supergirl into a real teenaged girl and not some slightly younger looking Power Girl, or anorexic, pantiless, super-short-skirted supermodel ala Churchill. I feel like I got the better end of the deal, too, for all the detail and work he put into this sketch.
Following my double pages on Marseille.Lunch at the district of the "Panier". The seagull and the basket carrying Marseille is for CarnetsdeBru and Aladin :-)
La suite de mes doubles pages sur Marseille. La pause déjeuner au quartier du Panier. La mouette et son panier transportant Marseille c'est pour CarnetsdeBru et Aladin :-)
... so for instance here's a freehand sketch on tracing paper laid overtop of this grid
The sketch is of just the room I was sitting in. Using astronomy tricks: The my the back of my hand at arms length = 10 degrees: 3 fingers = 5 degrees.
