I spent longer on this sketch of a stand of bare Aspen trees than perhaps any previous Moleskine-sized sketch. It was done "from life" and took roughly 45 minutes.

On this particular sketch, I decided to do a bit of basic 2H pencil layout first just so I could get the relative positions of the trees, branch crossings, etc. set up. I didn't do any erasing, so perhaps I could have worked in pen from the start. However, it was somewhat relaxing to have the basic outlines established, and then to follow up with pen rendering. Once the pen rendering was done, I did erase the pencil guidelines.

Part of me wants to do some crosshatching behind the main stand of trees to provide contrast, but I'm afraid of losing fine detail in the smaller branches. I guess I'm a chicken.

I used a 0.1 Staedtler pigment liner for the major shapes, followed by more detailed line work with a Sakura 005 in the large Moleskine sketch book.

Evening Sketch, Place Emile Combes, the terrasse is nearly on the street :). Due to warmer temperature, the customers are back.

I'm not very good with heights but managed to spend some time at the top of The Lighthouse to sketch a bit of the Glasgow skyline.

We've seen three huge swans in Gorky Park, Moscow. I could not stay quiet and made couple of little sketches. They are so amazing! It was my first time so close to them. Never thought they are that big and strong. One brave sparrow tried to chat with a female swan. She was not in mood and made a gesture for him to leave. It was noble yet intense. He quickly escaped ;)

Been a while since I uploaded any sketches. Here's one!

5 minute sketch, back to the ol' gel pen on paper, 10"x14"

This is Cafe Nero, Didsbury. It's a busy view but I have restricted the watercolour palette and picked out highlights in cerulean blue and bright red. This sketch was done yesterday afternoon and took just under an hour and a half

With Seattle sketcher Gail Wong, I rode a Bolt Bus down to Portland for the day to participate in this annual event. It was my first real trip to spend any time in downtown Portland and was impressed with the architecture and culture of the city. I definitely will be back.

This building caught my eye because of the color around the windows of what seemed like a warehouse, only to be told by a passing mail courier that in 2012 it was the site of MTV's 28th season of 'The Real World', probably one of the original reality shows.

There were over a hundred sketchers attending the event and I met many great sketchers whose work I've enjoyed online and can now put a face to. I went back to Seattle that night on the bus, a bit much for one hot day (90+). Next time I'll stay for the weekend and why not, Portland has a lot to offer a sketcher.

Landscape, Trees and Shrubs Practice

I have a real problem rendering landscape plants. So I've been promising myself to just concentrate on rendering plants and foliage on occasion. This is one of those occasions.

I started on the left page by practicing the "classic" foliage stroke. It's amazing how easy it is in some directions and almost impossible in others. (I need more practice -- perhaps filling a page of each direction.) Then, using Rendering in Pen and Ink by Guptill as a reference, I worked on some small scene renderings. All sketching on this page was done with a #0 Rapidograph (.35mm).

On the right page, I gave myself a reward and drew one of my favorite photos using a sepia Micron pen (.50mm). Then, I switched gears back to plant rendering, this time using a black Pitt brush pen at bottom right. I find the brush pen can create nice lines, but it is very hard for me to be precise with it. I guess more practice is needed, but I'm not sure it's meant to be used the way I'm using it -- seems as though it would be hard on the tip.

deers question you
