I remember the master concept designer Ron Cobb speaking about how he loved to draw corridors...well, i love to build them in 1:18 scale! LOL! Here is corridor portal C to the Nostromo inspired by the 1979 film ALIEN. Both panels were made using sheet styrene. Seam lines need to be removed and the sculptural/detailed elements need to be added. These two panels will then have molds made and cast a couple times.
The second of two semi-static posed figures is complete. This version depicts the creature as it appears in the deleted "crab-walker" scene from the 1979 film as Lambert and Parker make a desperate attempt to escape the Nostromo. This deleted scene however was thought comical by many, not well executed on film and revealed too much of the creature...reducing it to nothing more than a man in a rubber suit...something Ridley Scott was avoiding by using smoke and shadow.
Hand sculpted, hand painted. 1:18 scale. I borrowed resin cast parts from the original Alien figure I created a year earlier, made modifications to the torso, neck, shoulders
and legs.
When crouched or "crab walking", the figure is approx. 3" high from highest point on head to the feet. When standing, the figure is approx. 5.25" high, still not fully erect as the leg and hip joints limit the full motion (again, this was originally meant to be a static posed figure). Fortunately I was able to add several articulation points to the figure: Ball jointed neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. Vacuum formed PETG dome is removable. The tail is static but is attached using a revoltech joint and can be switched out with a longer tail option.
Original was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two part epoxy. Parts were cast in resin and assembled to build this version. Used Model Masters Polly Scale and Tamiya acrylics.

***Special thanks to Blake Lowe of Blakemake.com (www.blakemake.com) for his awesome help with the vacuum forming!! Great attention to detail and fun to work with!***
Test shot of the custom vacuum formed plastic dome I will be using for my line of 1:18 scale Prometheus figures. I took some super sculpty and loosely sculpted the neck piece and trim for the dome to get the gist of how it may look. Still needs a little "girth" - a little more room within the dome. The head sculpt of Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) is also in the works - with a version with and without the helmet on the way.
Sculpt progress on the 1:18 scale Spraug figure as seen in the Dark Horse Comics series Star Wars: Invasion. Revisited the mid abdomen sculpt because the way I had it originally did not give continuity to the insectoid-like plates that run from the base of the neck down the back to the base of the tail. The cut off was too distinct, too wide. Now the sculpt looks more natural with the two segmented ball joints hidden but functional under the sculpt. #starwars #darkhorsecomics #invasion #spraug #sith_fire30
Castings made for the Derelict corridor - 1:18 scale, ALIEN 79. Building a new frame from foam core which these pieces will attached to - additional sculpting will bring all the parts together. Once complete I will begin working on the upper section of the corridor. Note that this is only one wall - I will have to sculpt the adjacent, taller wall to create the corridor. #alien #nostromo #derelict #giger #sith_fire30
Sculpt progress on the Praetorian (Egg Layer) Xenomorph - 1:18 scale - Alien: Defiance. Work in progress using Aves FIXIT sculpt from Aves Studio LLC.
YES! Back to some sculpting at last! Sorry for the delay guys/gals - life put things on hold for a bit. Hurricane Irma was a beast - and my prayers and well wishes for those whose been affected by the recent storms: Harvey, Irma and now Maria...Mother Nature tends to remind us of whose in charge from time to time. Which there was a gentler way.
Continued sculpting the upper torso on the Praetorian which shares the same body as the 79 Giger alien but at a larger scale. I'll share a scale shot later to let you see the difference. The sculpt you see is quite clean...but not for long. It's an exoskeleton of a creature designed to protect the queen as well as it's hive - the body needs be roughed up a bit. Not much as I have enjoyed the details of the sculpt and don't want to loose it. Just some scratches, breaks and pop marks...nothing too heavy. Working on the piping for the back with the lower abdomen and upper arms next on the table.
More to come! #alien #defiance #darkhorsecomics #aliens #praetorian #giger #sculpting #avesstudio #FIXIT #miniature
Nostromo corridor update - Medical Bay corridor - 1:18 scale. ALIEN 79. Finished adding the wall detail to the corridor - each individual piece so it's a bit time consuming. The payoff is worth it though. Wasn't very sure of the wall design (lack of reference images) so this pattern may not be "movie accurate" but I'm not out to make sure every inch of the craft is 100% accurate or I'd drive myself crazy. I think the Nostromo gods would forgive me. #alien #nostromo #corridors #modelbuilding #sith_fire30
Sculpt progress on AVA - Ex Machina - 1/12 scale. Because I'm forever curious, I decided to do some vacuum forming tests of Ava's torso, neck and skull cap. The images you see are the results. Would like to find a tighter mesh but for the tests I'm excited about the figures progression smile emoticon #exmachina #ava #A24 #robots #aliciavikander #sith_fire30
Detail work on the shoulder armor and chest pads to the 1:18 scale EV Suit Dallas. I plan on making one for Kane and Lambert as well!
Sculpt progress on Kane: Death Shroud - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Once again, a static figure of Kane's final sendoff when his body is shot out of the airlock into a starry abyss.
First step was to build a rough shape of the shroud as shown in a production photo of the physical garment that was used. This will not be matching the small wood carving that was made for the miniature shoot but will include some identifiable features from it.
So, first step - create a rough shape using FIXIT.
Next step, begin refining the shape to create an exaggerated frame to sculpt over. Complete. Looks like he's all locked up in a sleeping bag LOL!
The next step will be to sculpt over the frame and begin adding detail. The hood will be separate, held by a magnet and will include three alternate head sculpts...more to come! #kane #alien #nostromo #chestburster #sculpture #FIXIT #avesstudio #prop
Work in progress on my Lt. Ellen Ripley from Alien (1979) - Almost completed with the initial head sculpt (added hair) and will begin work on the body frame.
Sculpt update on Kane: Burial Shroud. 1:18 scale, ALIEN 79. Some have asked where this is seen in the film - it isn't....not much anyway. The body is seen in the main airlock via the monitors Dallas and the rest of the crew are gathered around and the next time you see Kane is when the miniature prop appears to be shot out of the airlock into deep space.
The sculpt I am working on reflects mostly the 1:1 prop the production team created to shoot a scene where Kane's corpse would make a return later in the film - please read this excellent article that defines that scene....
alienseries.wordpress.com/2013/08/20/the-funeral/
Much more detail to be added and a variant head sculpt or two to be made. Happy to be creating a not so well known piece of ALIEN lore. #alien #nostromo #kane #burialshroud #deletedscene #observationdome #sculpt
Work in progress of my 1:18 scale Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) - Head sculpt is complete - Will work on a paint up for Ripley, Dallas and The Old Republic's Satele Shan over the weekend :)
Spent some time yesterday building the 1:18 scale table and chairs for the Nostromo Galley diorama - inspired by the 1979 motion picture ALIEN. Seen here is the completed styrene construction of the table and charis. The chairs will be sculpted over with FIXIT to capture the material and leather cushioning. The table surface will have a mold made and casted three times...one for a clean table, one for a bloody table (chestburster) and the last one for a "milk" covered version (Ash). The surface will connect to the base with magnets. Oh and yes, I am sculpting simple renderings of the small Japaneese dipping bird toys that became a staple to the film. I'm a detail freak...
GREEBLIES!!!! Various parts placed together to create a complex set of exposed technology or junk. Doesn't really have to make sense at times...although there is a certain order that some must go by to make pieces appear to have functionality on certain perts of the ship...like the bridge for example. I'm actually in the process of building a couple more panels like this to have more variety when roaming the Nostromo corridors. ...#alien #nostromo #modelbuilding #smoothon #sith_fire30
"Some assembly required" - Build update on the second alt posed version of "The Beast" - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Okay, more like A LOT of assembly is required HA! I began assembling the semi-articulated version of the "squatting" alien yesterday. Hollowed out the upper and lower halves of the torso so the pieces, when merged, will bend with the use of a heat gun. Did the same for the upper/lower legs and ankles.
It's tricky - too hot, the resin crumbles. Not enough heat, the resin cracks under the stress. Just right, the resin folds like cloth...for just a few seconds! HA! Gotta be quick.
I was worried about the balance of the figure in this squatting position - so far, so good. It's able to stand on it's own.
Added ball joints to the shoulders and will articulate the elbows and wrists tonight. The neck contains a ball joint as well and the head has a wide range of movement.
So, progress has been made smile emoticon This series of three may be "fixed" posed pieces for the most part but I think they'll look very good when complete. More to come! #alien #aliens #bigchap #actionfigure #custom #art #resin #smoothon #nostromo
Some additional details added to the head sculpt of AVA - Ex Machina - 1:12 scale. Added the detailing to the machine skull as well as a more dramatic inset to separate the machine skull from the face of Ava. This will aid in the vacuum formed dome later. Sculpting her feet now. #exmachina #ava #aliciavikander #A24 #sith_fire30
Last month I completed a sculpt of a male base body which I hoped to replicate and use for a variety of figures - all static, non-articulated. I made a mold of the figure last week and had some time to cast several copies last night. I hope to use these for Kane, Dallas, Ash and Brett bodies for the sleep chamber (Parker needs a larger frame) as well as Kane with facehugger in the AutoDoc. #alien #nostromo #kane #facehugger #autodoc #sithfire30
The mold for the Derelict corridor wall panel turned out great as well - 1:18 scale - ALIEN 79. This is a one piece mold so one hand held the camera while the other attempted to pry the two parts apart so you can see the details captured. Did my best LOL! The test now will be casting to see if I allowed for plenty of ventilation so air can escape. If not I will go back and add venting where needed. Tons of detail in this sculpt so it's gotta come out looking perfect. This mold will be used several times so I don't need the headache of worrying about trapped air and wasting material. #moldmaking #derelict #alien #giger #smoothon #moldmax14NV #sith_fire30
Ash (Ian Holm) - Painted sample complete. Will begin working on the figures body frame and sculpt. A seconds and third version of the Ash head sculpt is in the works...one involving "milk".

Starkiller's two head sculpts (standard and "rage") are original sculpts depicting the character from the concept art and not that of the actor. When I have time I will go back and sculpt an actor likeness.
The shoulder armor is a seperate piece and is attached by a clear band around the shoulder.
The body is a full sculpt using a custom made articluated frame or armature. The figure contains 14 points of articulation.
Included to hilts which are built from existing parts, can be attached to chest using clear banding. Also included are to sabers with attached beams. Lightsabers do not light up.
The arena robes are from the Darth Maleval box set and was altered/reworked then painted to give a worn look. Hood is from a VOTC Darth Sideous, altered and repainted.
Figure was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt and hand painted using Testors Polyscale and Floquil acrylics.
Build update of the 1:18 scale Nostromo Cafeteria corridor section- ALIEN 79. Poor iPhone shots so I apologize ahead of time. Intricate, tedious work...getting close to having both walls complete. A great introduction to the complexities that lie ahead with the remainder of the galley and the bridge. Looking good when it's all starts to come together though. Sculpt week began today smile emoticon Have some figures to get to work on. #alien #nostromo #galley #sith_fire30 (4 photos)
Results from my "casting party" last night - One complete set I will archive with my sculpted masters while using the other sets to complete a few semi-static posed ALIENS....examples from the production images attached. I'm not concentrating too hard on max articulation with this figure simply because in the film the creature wasn't that animated...more of a creeper, hidden and secluded...like a spider in a hole. Also I lack the tooling abilities needed to make one as articulated as NECA or S.H. Figuarts...just the plain, simple truth. They all will have bendy tails though - still working on making that work. This will be a different story when it comes to the Warrior and Dog alien as we have seen them to be more action oriented.
Completed Jedi Master Luke Skywalker as seen in issue #3 of Star Wars Invasion by Dark Horse Comics. Luke is in command of Republic forces sent to the planet Rychel in order to repel the invading forces of the Yuuzhan Vong.
The figure was mostly sculpted in Aves Epoxy FIXIT sculpt using a plastic articulated armature. The forearms and hands have been recasted from original parts. The head originalted from a Legacy Snowspeeder Luke figure, casted in wax and completly retooled and refined adding additional markings to the face, age lines, a lower brow, hair and ears...I also strengthened the jaw. The figure measures 3.75" in height. Painted using Floyquil Acrylics by testors.
The Egg Morpher (Xeno) - ALIEN: Defiance (Dark Horse Comics) - 1:18 scale....Pulled from the pages of the Dark Horse Comics series Alien: Defiance and inspired by the artwork of artist Tristan Jones.
Sculpt update - Began working on the build late last week but haven't had time to post updates so what you will see here is a series of images taken along the course of several days (more like very late nights). The material I am using is Aves FIXIT Sculpt by Aves Studio LLC.
I always begin with sculpting the head first. This creature is larger that the standard xeno warrior so the figure will be featuring a completely new sculpt, no recast parts from others I've made. The body will be similar to the big chap (alien 79), but slightly larger, with longer limbs and fingers. I'm staying true to the artists concepts and panel depictions of the beast within the comic....to the best of my ability. This isn't my first rodeo when it comes to sculpting comic based characters (Star Wars anyone?).
The skull will be a hard shell, similar to the warrior drone. Very similar to the spitter alien (Colonial Marines) so I'm using a reduce frame of an existing spitter head cast. The head sculpt will feature both an open and closed mouth. Waiting to find out if the beast features a traditional inner jaw or an expanding protrusion similar to the Deacon from prometheus. About a half inch longer than the warrior drone head.
Much more to come - may revisit the sculpt on those teeth and make them a tad smaller....and more of them. More to come! #alien #aliens #defiance #darkhorsecomics #aliendefiance #eggmorpher #xenomorph #sculpture #avesfixitsculpt #avesstudio #miniature

Another static sculpt of Kane I am in the process of painting right now - ALIEN - 1:18 scale. Kane as he appears once the face hugger has had its way with him. Sleeping soundly. Will go well with the Autodoc diorama I plan to begin building soon. #alien #kane #nostromo #facehugger #sculpture #painting
Sculpt progress on Kane - Sleep Chamber - ALIEN 1:18 scale. After the passing of John Hurt I felt it wouldn't be appropriate to drop updates of his likeness pertaining to Kane sleeping or deceased...perhaps nobody would have cared but that's just me. Anyway, first off is an update of Kane in the sleep camber. My plan with the sleep chamber diorama is to have a static sculpt of each character quietly sleeping in their respective chamber. Kane is the first of the series. I have a male body that I have cast to create the static pieces but the parts need to be wired together in different poses. Doesn't make sense if they are all sleeping in the same position right? Looking a little rough right now but that will change with the next update. Hope to have the sculpt complete by the end of the week. #alien #kane #sleepchamber #nostromo #sculpting

Last updates of Build Week! Another shot of the Nostromo corridor leading to the sleep chamber. ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. If you recall last week I scratch built a single control panel out of sheet styrene then made a mold from it. here is the outcome - castings are clean and picked up the details I was hoping for. This little panel can be found all over the Galley section of the Nostromo so I will need to gain some of these up for a future mold instead of casting a single piece over and over again. ...#alien #nostromo #modelbuilding #smoothon #sith_fire30
Finished painted head sculpt of Parker (Yaphet Kotto). 1:18 scale. I'm happy with the sculpt work and paint app but need to make him a bit more serious looking - he looks too pleasant, too calm. I will sculpt an alternate version with him wearing his bandanna.
