A small, short book (82 pages) that I'm slowly reading now, as much about Simic's views as Cornell's. Much of it seems very similar to the interests of photographers, especially amateurs who wander around looking for pictures and accumulating them nowadays on their computer hard drives, combining them into albums, photostreams, sets, slideshows, and even outright collages sometimes. Cornell was one of the first to become absorbed in making collages and assemblages. His life and methods interest me a lot, but the majority of his collages and boxes don't happen to appeal to me. However, some I like very much, like his box (untitled) illustrated on the left side of this picture (a small picture of this same box is also in Simic's book). To do Cornell justice I should have put Simic's little book together with lots more other appropriated images. (Here it's sitting on two pages of the one other book I own about Joseph Cornell, Master of Dreams by Diane Waldman, which I haven't yet started reading -- though I've often looked at the illustrations.)

WHERE CHANCE MEETS NECESSITY
Somewhere in the city of New York there are four or five still-unknown objects that belong together. Once together they'll make a work of art. That's Cornell's premise, his metaphysics, and his religion, which I wish to understand.
He sets out from his home on Utopia Parkway without knowing what he is looking for or what he will find. Today it could be something as ordinary and interesting as an old thimble. Years may pass before it has company. In the meantime, Cornell walks and looks. The city has an infinite number of interesting objects in an infinite number of unlikely places.
More than 40 companies, counting 700 people, have received money from the EU to manufacture this component. Nine more magnets are in production. I left parts of myself everywhere* transforms the gallery into a moving image environment. The interconnected installations speak to the experience of dislocation and fractured relationship to body, language, and place. They trace the deep yet precarious connections that emerge between human and nonhuman bodies and ecosystems; connections that are constantly both found and severed. The exhibition maps an experiential space that is both permeated with vitality and haunted by personal and ecological loss.
Eeva Siivonen’s experimental moving image practice engages with strategies of documentary, essay, and found footage film practices. She employs these strategies to construct affective and immersive moving image installations and single-channel works. Her practice describes subjective experience in ways that resist separation between self and other, interior and exterior, human and nonhuman, and living and nonliving. The ethos of her practice is to create space for empathy by embracing the impossibility of gaining knowledge of ourselves and others, and our place in the world.
Eeva Siivonen is originally from Helsinki, Finland. She has received MFA degrees in Video Art from Syracuse University and Documentary Film from Aalto University in Helsinki. She exhibits her work internationally at film festivals and gallery exhibitions. Most recently, her work has been screened at San Francisco Cinematheque’s Crossroads festival, DOBRA International Festival of Experimental Cinema in Rio de Janeiro, and Transient Visions Festival of Moving Image in Johnson City, NY. She has also received multiple international residency fellowships and recently spent two months in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as an artist-in-residence at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation in Taos, New Mexico.
*The exhibition title is borrowed from the poem “St. Thomas Aquinas” by Serbian American poet Charles Simic.
