Evening Walk
by Charles Simic
You give the appearance of listening
To my thoughts, O trees,
Bent over the road I am walking
On a late summer evening
When every one of you is a steep staircase
The night is slowly descending.
The high leaves like my mother’s lips
Forever trembling, unable to decide,
For there’s a bit of wind,
And it’s like hearing voices,
Or a mouth full of muffled laughter,
A huge dark mouth we can all fit in
Suddenly covered by a hand.
Everything quiet. Light
Of some other evening strolling ahead,
Long-ago evening of silk dresses,
Bare feet, hair unpinned and falling.
Happy heart, what heavy steps you take
As you follow after them in the shadows.
The sky at the road’s end cloudless and blue.
The night birds like children
Who won’t come to dinner.
Lost children in the darkening woods.
the soul of the first one to rise in the morning, perhaps? Photography is a black art like alchemy. It turns matter into spirit and spirit into matter. Still, there are moments when looking at a photograph of a night sky we have a hunch what the word soul means, what the word infinity encompasses.

______________
O lugar
Eles conversavam sobre a guerra
Sentados a uma mesa ainda por levantar.
Do outro lado da rua, a primeira janela
Da noite já estava iluminada.
Ele estava sentado, curvado, imóvel,
o velho medo acometendo-o...
Escureceu.

My Blue Heaven
due tre sere al mese.
In genere, però, era tranquillo.

And never getting anywhere.…

This antique perfume bottle is 3.8cm (1.5") at the widest point in the body (not in this photo). The neck is 3.8cm (1.5") long. The glass bauble sitting atop the cork stopper is smaller than a green pea; the glass dipper is visible inside the bottle.

Thank you for taking the time to visit. Your comments and/or faves are always appreciated.
....There was something
Long before there were words:
The evening meal of sheperds...
A fleeting whiteness among the trees...
Eternity eavesdropping on time....

Another place I used to visit frequently as a teenager; not a far walk from where I lived, it was always a scenic place to sit and listen to the waves, or to chat with friends.
Spoiled with the surroundings, you'd some times fail to notice the details in the building; or to take note of the history. I think these things are always appreciated a little more after a time away.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

just enough light to make out

On the inner walls.

A stretched DB9 with a weird looking butt..yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
But it's SO elegant...love it!

Thread through her eye:
Two secret thoughts
A hair dipped in the ink of a spider
The silence of certain color.
Stitch then that hole
Yawning toothless
From the back of my hanging shirt.
You'll hear the sound
Of nails growing
On sleeping men.

Do you keep losing your needles?
Tie in a handkerchief
A little salt, a little smoke,
It's time that you go looking for them.
When your little finger gets lost
In a forest, so that those
Who come later find only its ring
With thorns growing from the gold,
Know that you are near.
Close your eyes then.
If the needles open their doors,
They'll blind you.
4
Whenever a needle gets lost
She makes a perfect circle.
Her small eye becomes even smaller.
The match lit for her dies
In a noose of smoke. Every thread in the world
Turns black.

On a very personal note I can say that it was one of the most fantastic places I visited in Scotland ... there at the end of the land, resisting the elements, the abandoned lighthouse fights everything and everyone ... With a surreal wheather so typical of this beautifull country we, in a space of 10 minutes, caught rain, hail, sun and so much wind that almost lifted us in the air ... this place has everything ...
The Niest Point Lighthouse is situated in the West Coast of Skye in the area known as ‘Durinish and is one of the most famous lighthouses in Scotland and can be found in the Isle of Skye.
From the very start at the carpark there are impressive views of the surrounding cliffs, but the lighthouse itself is certainly worth a walk back along the cliff to observe t it up close...in the way you can see sheep grazing by the path...

"Winter coming. Like the last heroic soldier
Of a defeated army, you'll stay at your post,
Head bared to the first snow flake.
Till a neighbor comes to yell at you,
You're crazier than the weather, Charlie. "

And what did you, dear Madame, expect the cage to look like after fifty years of searching for a bird? Waiting for years by the side of some road to hitch a ride, sleeping under bridges, drowning one’s disappointment in dives from Hong Kong to San Francisco, meeting jewel thieves, burglars, bank robbers, fortune-tellers and listening to their advice without ever enticing one damn bird. To Hold
So we’re dust. In the meantime, my wife and I
make the bed. Holding opposite edges of the sheet,
we raise it, billowing, then pull it tight,
measuring by eye as it falls into alignment
between us. We tug, fold, tuck. And if I’m lucky,
she’ll remember a recent dream and tell me.
One day we’ll lie down and not get up.
One day, all we guard will be surrendered.
Until then, we’ll go on learning torecognize
what we love, and what it takes
to tend what isn’t for our having.
So often, fear has led me
to abandon what I know I must relinquish
in time. But for the moment,
I’ll listen to her dream,
and she to mine, our mutual hearing calling
more and more detail into the light
of a joint and fragile keeping.

During World War II, Charles Simic felt that his early school days in Yugoslavia may have had a big impact on his life. “I was often told to stand in a corner, for hours, days, even months, it seemed. That’s probably why I became a poet. First you’re angry. Then you mellow and start to look out the window and see the details … a deep melancholy comes over you.”
My Noiseless Entourage
We were never formally introduced.
I had no idea of their number.
It was like a discreet entourage
Of homegrown angels and demons
All of whom I had met before
And had since largely forgotten.
In time of danger, they made themselves scarce.
Where did they all vanish to?
I asked some felon one night
While he held a knife to my throat,
But he was spooked too,
Letting me go without a word.
It was disconcerting, downright frightening
To be reminded of one's solitude,
Like opening a children's book---
With nothing better to do---reading about the stars,
How they afford to spend centuries
Traveling our way on a glint of light.

My younger self was very worried. I studied psychology and art in college, and I was very confused when I graduated. A lot of my friends were moving to New York and getting internships, but everything for me happened a lot slower, and I was a bit depressed about my lack of direction. So I wish I could tell my younger self that everything will work out. Although, I always felt like a loser compared to my friends who were getting corporate jobs, I always had a very strong conviction in my heart that I was an artist. I had a corporate job for two weeks and I quit because my soul was dying. So I would tell my younger self that I am so proud of you for quitting that corporate job, and not be so down on myself for not moving as quickly as some of my peers.

It occurred to Chairman Mao one day to find out from his chief of secret police how many empty cages there were in China and whether they were being carried about at night by suspicious individuals he was not aware of or were they ghosts of some of his old party comrades whom he had imprisoned and tortured over the years.
