Back to the barnies today. With so many pictures to process from the shoot, these guys will feature regularly for some time
The barn owl is renowned for it's silent wing beat, as it quarters the countryside in search of unsuspecting voles.
Owls are known as silent predators of the night, capable of flying just inches from their prey without being detected. The quietness of their flight is owed to their specialized feathers.
When air rushes over an ordinary wing, it typically creates a “gushing” noise as large areas of air turbulence build up. But the owl has developed feathers which stabilise the air flow, resulting in a large reduction in aerodynamic noise. This is then further absorbed, by their downy feathers, resulting in the ultimate stealth attack.
As I watched his display my excited breathing was the only noise to be heard.

A beautiful Blue Heron silently makes its way through tall grass on the shoreline of a lake in southwestern Florida while hunting for prey. To get this shot, I used the same technique... quietly inching my way towards the shoreline while keeping a tree between me and the heron.

Here’s a monochrome photo of the abandoned Cloutier Public School in Cloutier, Iowa. The building is amazingly untouched by graffiti, but smashed windows are a sign that it has not been completely spared from vandalism. The interior of the building has been badly ravaged by water damage, mostly due to water leaks in the roof.
For context, the population of this small town in 2024 was only 209 people and that’s down 1.88% from the 2020 census. The school was built in 1925 and in 1961 it merged with Traer School to become the Traer-Clutier Community School District. The consolidation of rural school districts continued, and in 1965, the Dinsdale Community School joined in, forming North Tama County Community School District.

This is one of the spectacular views you're rewarded with as you reach the summit of Binnian. If it's your first time as it was for me then you're in for surprise as there is no sign of Silent Valley at all as you're ascending the mountain and this is the first view you see as you reach the summit and look over the other side. Amazing!
It was very difficult to portray the sheer scale of the scene in a photo (for me anyway lol) but I'll keep trying!
