I was out cutting down a dead tree for firewood on my land with my snowmobile and chain-saw when I noticed this owl, once I got home with the wood I came back with my camera and found him in the same spot. He didn't mind the noise of my skidoo at all when I pulled up so I stayed for about an hour in the middle of my field sitting and waiting for it to hunt. It was an hour well spent. The great grey only captured one mouse. I think it was due to the snow being so hard packed. Photo below (hand held)

The Silent Valley Reservoir is located in the Mourne Mountains near Kilkeel. It supplies most of the water for County Down and large parts of County Armagh Greater Belfast. It was built between 1923 and 1933 by a workforce of over 1,000 men, nine of whom died during construction. It is around 3 kilometres long.

Another image from our wet snow event - there is nothing quite like walking in a forest immediately following a deep, sticky snowfall. Somehow the snow creates a hushed atmosphere unlike any other.
