The reservoir in this view was constructed at Silent Valley in the Mourne mountains between 1923 and 1933, to supply the water needs of the city of Belfast. Such was the scale of this project that it needed its own village on site - called Watertown - to house up to 700 engineers, labourers and their families. However, today only the foundations of the village's buildings can be found, often hidden in the undergrowth.
The wall of the massive earth dam rises up at an angle on the left, while in the foreground is the huge funnel-shaped overflow, clearly not needed at the time of being photographed due to the low water level in the reservoir. I'm sorry that there is little in the shot to give a proper idea of scale, but I think there are a couple of tiny people walking along the top of the dam.
