Sign at former on-base gas station. I remember my parents buying gas here in the 1970s, when my father was still serving in the Navy.

The #FlickrFriday #SignOfTheTimes challenge
08:20, Tuesday 22nd May 2018. It's rush hour on Westminster Bridge, London. Commuters, pedestrians, cyclists all head to work without a glance at features of the bridge which were not here a year ago.
On 22nd March 2017 in the early afternoon, a motorist deliberately mounted this very pavement, travelling at high speed, running over whoever he could. On reaching Parliament Square he abandoned his vehicle, running into the precincts of Parliament, clutching two knives. Here he met resistance from PC Keith Palmer who, like 95% of his colleagues nationwide, was unarmed. PC Palmer died of stab wounds. His assailant was shot dead by a nearby close protection officer. Parliament went into lockdown. Four people, who had simply been crossing a bridge while enjoying one of the world's iconic cityscapes, died of their injuries. Many more were seriously injured.
PC Palmer was posthumously awarded the George Medal, the UK's highest award for gallantry exhibited by those not under military command.
On 22nd May 2017 22 people were killed in a suicide bombing at a pop concert at Manchester Arena. The city united. Taxi drivers gave free rides home. Members of the Sikh community purchased water for the victims. Three days later a minute's silence to honour the dead ended with an impromptu rendition of 'Don't Look Back In Anger'.
On 3rd June 2017 another vehicle borne attack occurred, this time on London Bridge, a few kilometres downstream of Westminster Bridge. Again a vehicle mounted the pavement, again a knife attack followed. Eight people died. The three attackers were shot dead by police firearms officers within eight minutes of the first call to them.
This photo, its colours muted, was taken on the anniversary of the Manchester attack. It shows how the pavement and the one opposite have been protected from vehicle borne attack by barriers running the length of the bridge and large bollards at each end. Many other bridges have been similarly adorned. And if we pay attention as we walk around our cities, we may notice many other examples of defensive measures. Bollards prevent vehicular access to prominent sites, especially stations. Company head offices frequently feature steps to their entrances, their frontages may have large raised flower beds or water features. All very attractive, but discreetly serving purposes beyond aestheticism. It's the new normal and a barely noticed sign of the times we live in.
Image / title inspire behind Banksy's "Balloon Girl Shredded" idea apparently.
Site of the half-demolished former Shredded Wheat factory in Welwyn Garden City.. to make way for a sprawling housing development to hold c. + 6000 new inhabitants, dropped slap bang in the compact town centre with its already over-patronised shops & cafes.
A beautiful & peaceful town, the second Garden City to be built & with its residents' space and quality of life in mind - soon to be over-run and re-branded " Welwyn Sardine City" #signofthetimes

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach(to play one day)
and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and
milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;
and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and
may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.
For whatever we lose(like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

Signs like this marked the locations of pay telephones across the United States from the 1960s until the phones began disappearing in the 1990s.
This relic is still attached to a utility pole in San Jose, California. There's no trace of the telephone booth or kiosk which it once marked.
