Toronto, Ont. February 28: The final moments before the final closure of David Mirvish Books on Markham Street. The bookstore, one of the mainstays in Mirvish Village for over 30 years, was a place you'd find books on art that couldn't be found almost anywhere else.

Shooting through the windshield produced some ghosting of the image, it was too important a moment not to catch this scene.

On January 17, 2021 demonstrators with the activist group March For The Dead gathered outside Trump Tower in Manhattan to mourn the 400,000 COVID lost, denounce the neglect by the current administration and call for fundamental, systemic changes to ongoing problems revealed by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Traffic sign augury? I posted a color version of this photo nearly a year ago. Someone had removed the top screw and let the sign flip so it pointed down and to the left. I wondered whether it was a leading political and economic indicator, pointing toward a a leftward turn in our politics and a downward turn in the economy. I'm always seeing these little omens in everyday things, and usually they mean absolutely nothing. Not so this time.
At the time, I thought the Junior Senator from Illinois was really running for Vice president on a Clinton ticket. I thought That she had a lock on the nomination and that she would have a good chance to be elected. The picture was a light-hearted way of finding omens and portents that reinforced my view. The housing bubble had started to break, but we were many months from seeing the real impact. What a year! I guess I'll pay more attention to unusual traffic signs from now on.

Two police officers stand over an unconsious homeless man in front of a liquor store. The man passed out after drinking rum while sitting on the curb. The police were waiting for an ambulence to take him to the hospital.

While I understand why many people find the smoking ban a positive thing, I strongly disagree with the government stepping in. I have long held the belief that if there was a true demand for smoke-free bars, the free market would have made it so.
