For decades Arthur Sparr owned and operated this drug store/medical supply shop/luncheonette around the corner from Boston's famous hospitals in the Longwood medical area. It was one of the few places on earth where you could shop for a stethoscope while waiting for your turkey club. He closed the business in 2002 and the building was eventually sold to Harvard Medical School. Luckily this high-quality ghost sign remains. (#90 of 100 in the Boston Signage Project)

This spot on Congress Avenue in Chelsea was a longstanding home to the popular El Dorado Bakery until it was destroyed by fire in late 2013. The brick wall of the adjacent building was exposed once the charred remains were removed, revealing an amazing Pillsbury painted ghost sign which had been unseen for decades. This Bronze or brass or whatever metal sign found in Lower Manhattan shows how much longer some metals last outdoors in contrast to paper. I would guess that this sign is perhaps fifty to 100 years old and still going strong. It is useful too. It functions as a handle to open the metal doors in the sidewalks of New York to get into the basement areas. Now, of course, they also use locks . In addition to being good looking to me it is also a work of street art. On another level it is a circle which may be a portal or a sign for one but don't get me started on that.

This is one of the busiest corners in the Nobb Hill area of Albuquerque. It has 5 different streets merging at this point. It can get a bit congested here at times and it's got lots of signs. I only got a few in this shot. Interesting sign above telling the pedestrian to use the cross walk, but then above says "no pedestrians"...a tad confusing! I love the Model Pharmacy sign about the European Fragrances, it's a favourite of mine.

This reverse painted counter/desk sign is a terrific example of mid 1930's radio advertising/marketing. The glass is mounted on a thick piece of stained wood with a stand on the back so it can rest on a counter top. It must have been displayed with several Rogers radios at an electronic shop or department store.
Below are some late 50's - early 60's Rogers Majestic radios. At this point in time the famous Canadian Rogers company had been bought by Philips Electronics in Holland. The radios below were manufactured by Philips.
I do have some 1930's Rogers tube radios but have never gotten around to photographing them.
Rogers (Standard Radio Manufacturing) was a well established and historic Canadian Company. In 1924 the company founder Ted Rogers Sr. developed the first radio tube to operate on alternating current. In 1928 Standard Radio merged with the Grigsby-Grunow Company of Chicago, manufacturer of "Majestic" radios thus the name Rogers Majestic.
Ted Rogers Sr. died in 1939 and in 1941 Rogers radio was sold to Small Electric Motors Limited. In 1945 Small Electric Motors Limited was sold to Philips Electronics Ltd.

This was a sign I owned for a while. I ended up selling it because it was simply too large. It was 12 feet tall. If I''d have put it all the way to the ceiling in my garage, it would have only been 4' from the floor. I felt that was too low and would end up getting damaged. It sure was a beautiful sign and in excellent condition (just needed a few pieces of neon tubing fixed at the bottom).
Near the entrances, Shoppers places signs with the Shoppers logo. When the late 2000s decor package was introduced, Shoppers replaced the orange with red.
The dog on this sign caught my attention. I was immediately reminded of the Egyptian god Anubis, so I thought it would be fun to play around a bit.

While the Milk Farm has been gone for many years, their sign still stands alongside interstate 80. Back in the early 60's, it was the only thing along this stretch of the interstate.
Located in Depot Town, the historic section of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Several faded ghost signs are also visible on the side of this building.
Krueger "K Man" Bar Sign, circa 1940's, or earlier? There is no phosphor coated glass here, all glass is clear or tinted. The outer ring is clear w/ mercury vapor and liquid mercury. The inner ring is tinted yellow, filled with mercury vapor, which glows blue, to make green. The words are clear w/ neon. The "K Man" is a small 1/4" diameter glass with mercury vapor. This is a real work of art. Krueger was a New Jersey brand based out of Newark. The company operated from 1858 to 1961. From my personal collection.
