Worthing West signal box was located by the Down Main line alongside South Farm Road level crossing, and was a Saxby and Farmer Type 5 design which was opened in 1877 by the London Brighton and South Coast Railway. The signal box was renamed Worthing Central "B" on 5th July 1936. The signal box was renamed again Worthing "B" on 4th March 1968 and was further renamed Worthing on 30th December 1973 when control of Worthing station passed to the signal box after the closure of Worthing "A" signal box. Closure came on 4th June 1988 when signalling between East Worthing and Durrington-on-Sea passed to the new signalling panel in Lancing signal box, the level crossing being controlled by closed circuit television from Lancing signal box

"Before the advent of 2-way radios, GPS, radar and all the other electronics that we seem incapable of going to sea without, vessels ventured around the globe with no other method of communicating than by signal flag.

Although not used much for sending long messages anymore it's an asset to be able to recognize each individual signal flags as they all have single letter meaning i.e. U = running into danger, Z = I require a tug,Q = my vessel is healthy and so on."

Simple signal control card to detect the polarity of 12v momentary pulses used for two-wire Kato N gauge points (turnouts), in order to set station throat LED signals via 4 bistable latching relays (which hold their state even when power is off). The onboard LEDs show the current state of each relay for diagnostics. DIL connector pins are soldered in pairs for increased resilience.

Pacifastacus leniusculus.

An invasive species in the UK, the fungal "crayfish plague" that they carry has wiped out the native "white-clawed crayfish" in most regions of the UK.

They can be identified by their large size when fully grown, their claws are larger in comparison to body size with turquoise/white markings at the hinge and bright orange/red colour under the claws.

Ahead of the EU-US summit on 20 November, MEPs agreed their recommendations on positions the Council should take regarding key transatlantic issues such as economic co-operation, personal data protection, the introduction of a US travel fee and recent leaks of US classified military documents on Iraq.

The state of EU-US trade relations amid the economic crisis is a key issue for MEPs with a view to the next meeting of the Transatlantic Economic Council. Parliament restates its support for a barrier-free transatlantic market by 2015 but voices concern about differing rules on novel foods, genetically modified products and animal cloning, and stresses the need for US authorities to accept metric-only labelling of EU products.

The adoption of a joint EU-US action strategy for the protection of intellectual property rights, including negotiations on an Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), is another important demand of the resolution, which was adopted by show of hands.

MEPs debate upcoming EU-US summit with Commissioners Viviane Reding and Karel De Gucht. EU governments were represented by Stefaan De Clerck of the Belgian government (below).

Today's job started off in the morning by planting a new concrete gate clapper post at Garvestone Level Crossing. This will allow us to fit a gate lock to the crossing and control the level crossing from a new ground frame. We then moved on to this post which was erected a couple of weeks ago. This is the view after the ladder had been fitted, but before we had attached any of the fittings.

A NASA-funded sounding rocket mission will launch from an atoll in the Pacific this spring. The mission will help scientists better understand and predict the electrical storms in Earth's upper atmosphere that can negatively affect satellite communication and global positioning signals.

The mission, called EVEX, for the Equatorial Vortex Experiment, will launch into a crucial layer of charged particles surrounding our planet. Called the ionosphere, this layer serves as the medium through which high frequency radio waves – such as those sent down to the ground by global positioning system (GPS) satellites or, indeed, any satellite communicating with Earth – travel. The ionosphere begins about 60 miles above the ground and is filled with electrons and ions, alongside the more familiar extension of our electrically neutral atmosphere. Governed by Earth’s magnetic field, high-altitude winds, and incoming material and energy from the sun, the ionosphere can be calm in certain places or times of day, and quite turbulent at others.

EVEX will launch two rockets for a twelve-minute journey through the equatorial ionosphere above the South Pacific. This area of the ionosphere is known for calm days and tempestuous evenings, times when the ionosphere becomes rippled like a funhouse mirror, disturbing radio signals, and introducing GPS errors of a half mile or more. The two rockets will measure events in two separate regions of the ionosphere to see how they work together to drive the ionosphere from placid and smooth to violently disturbed. Such information could ultimately lead to the ability to accurately forecast this important aspect of space weather.

The launch window for EVEX is from April 27 to May 10. The team will decide when to fly based on conditions in the ionosphere on any given night.

Another signal tracer in the collection. I've never used it but was told it was in working condition. Probably needs to be re-capped and have the resistors checked but the eye tube is bright.

Description

Signal_Ethique_Montagne de la Serre (Le Crest)

Par Arnaud HUART

[(Français), France]

Un signal dans le paysage comme marqueur mental...

>>> Oeuvre

Standing out from the crowd in Times Square.

Photographing strangers in public like this is a bit of a rarity for me. It's easy to shoot from the side or behind, to give some added interest to a photo that's ostensibly of something else. When taking a photo from head-on, though, how do you distinguish between just a random snapshot, and something more artistic?

In the two images I'm posting today, I tried to find some sort of symmetry or balance between my main subject and some other element in the frame - in this case the orange hand of the crosswalk sign.
